Cause of Federal Retards like this...

Baggage screener asleep on the job
Monday, January 6, 2003 Posted: 7:54 AM EST (1254 GMT)

Twenty-three incoming flights were delayed after a baggage screener was discovered napping.

SEATAC, Washington (AP) -- Two separate incidents at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport -- a baggage screener found sleeping on the job and a bomb threat -- sparked long delays for post-holiday travelers.

Airport business began to return to normal by midnight Sunday, officials said.

In the first incident Sunday morning, a screener was discovered asleep at his post and security personnel checked the concourses, some with explosive-sniffing dogs, said Bob Blunk, Transportation Security Administration director for the airport.

"There's no indication anything happened. It's just that somebody fell asleep," airport spokesman Bob Parker said.

The screener, discovered napping at about 6 a.m., apparently was asleep for eight to 30 minutes, Parker said. The concourses were reopened at about 8:10 a.m.

The screener was stationed at the exit from one of the stations on the underground train system linking the terminals.

Twenty-three incoming flights were delayed, Parker said.

Then Sunday night, a caller began making bomb threats.

"We had a few bomb threats from an individual. They were more specific than most threats," airport spokeswoman Terri-Ann Mohon said shortly before midnight.

The person began calling at 9:40 p.m., she said. Security officials swept the terminals but found nothing amiss. Planes took off and landed during the sweep, but passengers were kept aboard arriving planes until the search ended.

Mohon said she did not expect the scare to affect flights or other airport operations Monday.

The airport averages about 80,000 passengers a day during the Christmas-New Year's holidays, Parker said, and the delays caused everything from resignation to frustration among passengers as they were herded back through security checkpoints.

"They need to streamline the security procedure," said Tim Goldstein. "I hope this never happens again."

Gene Matt, who was seeing his daughter off to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, said he got trapped in a crowd and could not move.

"The polite folks got stuck," he said.

Airport workers with megaphones directed passengers to various lines, some trying to mollify the anxious crowd with humor. "Please don't kill me in the rush," said one worker. "I'm only a small one."

Terry Sinclair, who was seeing his daughter off to Boston and travels a lot himself, shrugged off complaints about the delay.

"It's one of the better organized airports," he said. "We in Seattle don't realize how good we have it."

Soon after, several bomb threats were made.  Really tied up the airport.  First the Press made a big deal out of it, inspiring pranksters  to phone in bomb threats afterwards.  Nothing was back to normal until midnight last night.

How does that give him right to endanger lives of hunderds of people? If he is incapable of performing his responcibilities, he should take a day off. Of course that would cut into his vacation plans or, god forbid cost him some money if it's an unpaid day-off.

I'd say screeners should be treates as military centries. If you cannot stand guard for some reason, you better tell it your commanding officer before your shift. If you are caught sleeping - to the jail you go or summary execution at a time of war.

Asleep on the job.  I feel secure, don't you?  Thank heavens the managers don't have the authority to fire the guy on the spot who was sleeping.  I beleive he is not working but will get his pay while the 1 and 1/2 year hearings are held to see if he needs to be fired.  If he does get fired, thank heavens unemployment insurance has been extended!  We surely don't want this guy working for as long as possible!

So so well said  :)  Bush wanted the ability to fire such "performers" as this, but it was stripped away at the "request" of the fine folks like Daschle and such.  Yay Union

I know this wasn't directed at me...however..I never understood this analogy.  How does "work efficiency" equal amount of work output, and how does it tie in with posting on a BBS?  I mean, I have test scripts running, I can't do anything on the computers I'm running test scripts on...theres nothing for me to do except wait until they are complete, then I can compile the information and start de-bugging.  Meanwhile, am I suppose to twittle my thumbs? I suppose I could read a magazine, alot of folks that do a similiar job DO, however I choose to use the time to grace you with my posts from a laptop :D

IMO, the airline industry is dying simply because it is no longer efficient at moving people from A to B in the "short haul" markets.

When it becomes much less hassle and nearly as fast to drive from Atlanta to Nashville or from Chicago to Indianapolis than it is to fly... people will drive.

The short haul markets used to be very, very lucrative. Much more so than TransCon.

That revenue stream is now very weak. Until they solve that, there's going to be a very large problem.

LOL! Just the other day, I was moving an old work station to another vacant cubicle, and my boss came by and mentioned that I probably shouldn't be doing that because "we have union people that could file a greviance"....

Sorry, I thought this thread was about how great the new armour model is and how addictive the panzer can be.

Nothing more for you aviators to see here. Move along, move along.

LOL.

I wonder though how much these screeners get paid. If it is near minimum wage then we get what we pay for.

That would be your concern only if you were the one paying the salary.
So we can rightly squeak about employees of a public sector because we pay their salary with our taxes. What we do in my job for a private company is between us and our bosses.

indirectly all expenses of corporations, publicly or privately owned, are paid by people (one reason why corporate taxes are such a load of crap - just another way for gov't to take your $$ w/out you knowing about it).  if you're wasting you organization's $$$ then you're costing your clients unneeded expense, an expense which gets passed allong as inflated prices or fees until it reaches the final consumer who if overcharged on one item, cannot afford the second item (costing a job down the line)....essentially all wealth growth can be traced to productiviy growth.

You mean they probably won't throw themselves in front of a barking AK-47 or jump on top of a human bomb for McDonald's wages?

The TSA went from 12 guys to over 40,000 in about 120 days... I would like to point out that 39,999 members of the TSA went to work that day and did their duty.

And yes I (CAV) am one of your Federal Baggage screener's. One of many that for the last four weeks have been working 12 hour days just so you buttheads can fly on time during the x-mas season.

One guy fall asleep, but most of us in  the TSA are trying our damnest to get it right. I was in the Army 22 years, went to war and many others things. But the TSA is one of the hardest tasks I have ever taken on.

So when you see things like this.... Well, toejam happpens.
