LOL, you should have heard the slant on our local news about it.  They tend to forget that 50% of Americans invest in the stock market via 401K's or Voluntary investment plans.  :)  Its not a stock market of yesteryear where big business had 85% of the shares. ;)

Its just another bill that might make the Repubs look good, so of course someone has to shoot it down. :)

People who aren't in favor of lower taxers should be required not to have automatic payroll deductions on their payroll check.  If they so love giving Uncle Sam money, then require them to write Uncle Sam a check every payroll day so they can be reminded, and enjoy, seeing a big bite of their check go BYE BYE.

What people tend to forget is that its those that are "wealthy" that get taxed the hardest, and God forbid the people who pay the bills get any sort of releif.

Those who don't pay taxes yet demand a rebate...please, get real.  So tired of seeing those whiney people on the instant polls on TV.  Wah, someone else is getting money back, its not fair Im not. Wah Wah Wah.  Shaddup and flip yer burgers.  :p

There are more stockholders than wage-earners in US today.

H. Godwineson: It's MY money! Give it BACK NOW!

 But you can hurt yourself with it - buy a toy gun, paint it black, try to rob someone and end up shot by police. Or you can buy cigarettes. Or a hamburger.

 Money should be banned. Only state officials with proper licenses should be able to use money.

The President proposed (and got) a tax cut because the economy was doing well....

Now the President is proposing a tax cut because the economy is doing poorly.....

Meanwhile spending continues to rise, and the federal budget deficit continues to grow.  :(

 Taxation of dividends is one of the most destructive economical actions ever. It helps huge companies but really hurts small and start-up businesses. Huge brake on economical growth. Opens way for all kind of financial abuse and inefficiency.

 All economists know that but politicians had to wait untill number of stockholders exceeded the number of wage earners. Carter proposed the removal of double taxation in 76(?) but changed  his mind - allegedely influenced by big business.

 NZ got rid of double taxation - and they are doing well as a result.

Yeah right. Clinton "created" a surplus and put it right next to the Social Security Lock Box.

MT,

Republicans controlled Congress for six of the eight years Clinton was in office, which is the only reason he didn't run naked through our tax money.  Don't they deserve some of the credit for that budget surplus?

Some of the current deficit results from the increased spending necessitated by the crisis that began on 9/11.  Since that event, which devastated one of the world's leading financial centers, the U.S. economy has been in a steadily deepening recession.  Recovery is not going to be easy because much of the western world is also in a recession, reducing markets for American goods overseas.  In addition, we have fought a war and drastically increased our security forces.  All of that has taken money out of an already weak economy.

Events beyond the control of either Republicans or Democrats have eroded the surplus.  Do you honestly believe that Democratic leadership could have prevented the deficits?

Don't get me wrong, I am all for getting rid of stupid taxes like the "marriage penalty", but federal spending continues to rise virtually unchecked.

Why is it thievery to give back money to those from which it was taken?

Local radio was bashing the tax cut saying that it only gives a break to 98 million tax payers... implying that only the upper crust get the break.

I found that humorous.

I simply can't understand how Bush can yell "War!" out of one side of his mouth and "Tax Cut!" from the other.

It doesn't make sense.

Cut the wasteful redistribution of wealth. The deficit does not mean that we tax to little. It means that we spend\waste too much. And the military is the only expense where we do not spend enough.

Seems like only yesterday one side was lambasting the other for offering everyone a $600 tax cut. It was too big, then it was too small to do any good.

Now that same side is offering a $300 tax cut.

Gotta love politics.

I was ROFTLOL when I heard that from the Democrats!  Not only that, but folks who do NOT work or contribute would also get a check.

Toad, Ripsnort, that's a bit of a simplistic view of it.

give credit where credit is due or at least try to portray what is happening as objectively as possible. You may all hate the democrats (although I know Ripsnort says he votes on issues not party political lines. Still it would be best to not misrepresent the other side if one is to have broad credibility across political lines.

Their proposed tax cuts target a different demographic group - or at least that is their intent. Whether it's true or not I won't comment on, more than it's the same lies all politicians produce - furthering their own agenda by hiding it in big words and platitudes.

Anyway for them it's too much and too little at the same time. Too much for the rich, too little for the middle class American.

Rip, not a flame mate, but you say you vote on issues and not along party lines, yet it seems you take very opportunity given to belittle the Democratic party. Understand that I am enither a democrat or Republican so I haven't got a vested interest. While you may not be biased (and I do believe you vote on issues) sometimes you come across as a die hard Republican masquerading as an 'objective' issue voting person. This is just my observation however - no insult intended. toejame, I hate commenting like this on people I respect.

Toad and Rip, I know a tongue in cheek comment with some seriousness behind it when I see it. Nice job :).

Oooh, I got a question btw. The democrats suggest giving tax breaks to people who do not pay taxes. How's this supposed to work? If you have nothing to get a break on, you'll get nothing in return. or are they suggesting taking someone elses tax break and giving to people who aren't contributing to society by way of taxes? That's just plain wrong.

Santa, why SHOULDN'T the rich get a tax cut? The top 1% pay something like 80% of the taxes!  The bottom 5% pay NO taxes. Naturally it only makes sense to give the folks paying the highest taxes a tax break. They're going to spend the money, and 70% of our ecomony relies on spending!

Incidently, I've NEVER been employed by a poor man. ;)

I've heard that argument before.  Numerous times.  I hear it, in fact, every time a tax cut is proposed.

Funny thing is, I got a tax cut in the fall of '01, and I am definitely NOT rich.  Not unless you include Arkansas teachers in the ranks of the wealthy.

This is a VERY simple way to understand the tax laws.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner.
The bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go
something like this.
The first four men-the poorest-would pay nothing;
The fifth would pay $1:
The sixth would pay $3;
The seventh $7;
The eighth $12;
The ninth $18.
The tenth man-the richest-would pay $59.
That's what they decided to do.
The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement-until one day, the owner threw them a curve.
"Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going
to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20."
So now dinner for the ten only cost $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.
So the first four men were unaffected.
They would still eat for free.
But what about the other six-the paying customers?
How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his "fair share?"
The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33.
But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the
fifth man and the sixth man would end up being *paid* to eat their meal.
So the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so the fifth man paid nothing, the sixth pitched in $2, the seventh paid $5, the eighth paid $9, the ninth paid $12, leaving the tenth man with a bill of $52 instead of his earlier $59.
Each of the six was better off than before.
And the first four continued to eat for free.
But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their
savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man.
He pointed to the tenth. "But he got $7!" "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man.
"I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got seven
times more than me!""That's true!" shouted the seventh man.
"Why should he get $7 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get
all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison.
"We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night he didn't show up for dinner, so the  nine sat down and ate without him.
But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered
something important.
They were $52 short!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college instructors, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction.  Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore.
Unfortunately, Liberals cannot grasp this straight.
Gotta love politics. I'd be laughing just as hard if the other side did a complete back-flip reversal too.
