Title: Name the band!
Post by: 2stony on January 07, 2003, 05:50:31 PM
The first person to name the band correctly, wins absolutely nothing.

Who first recorded "Black Magic Woman"?

(This should be easy for any of you old farts)

Fleetwood Mac?

Midnight TARGET is the winner!

Yes, people, Santana did not record "Black Magic Woman" first. It was recorded six months before them by Fleetwood Mac.
Also, this version of Fleetwood Mac was the first band. The original band consisted of Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, Bob Brunning and Jeremy Spencer. After some personnel changes, the finished product was Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Danny Kirwin and Jeremy Spencer.
After Peter Green left the band in 1970, it struggled on for a few months before disbanding. The next version consisted of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christie McVie and Bob Welsh. Their biggest hit was "Hypnotized".
Finally, the third version of the band took shape. Bob Welsh went solo and the version most of you are probably familiar with came into being. It consisted of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christie McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

It was Bruce Springstein, as someone already alluded too.  However MM adn the Earth band's version was much more successful.

Yanno, the lyrics to this song have long confused me. So today this thread encouraged me to look them up. Now I'm even more confused.

Sikboy...me too...why would anyone "wake up like a sweetheart?":D

The reason the lyrics are confusing is that it is not "wake up like a sweetheart"....

They are "Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night"

The song was off the Asbury Park NJ album.

:)

To avoid any further confusion, here are the lyrics to "Blinded By the Light".

"Blinded by the Light"
by Manfred Mann from The Roaring Silence (c) 1976 lyrics by Bruce Springsteen

Chorus:
   Blinded by the light
           Wrapped up like a deuce
           Another runner in the night
           Blinded by the light
           Wrapped up like a deuce
           Another runner in the night
           Blinded by the light
           Wrapped up like a deuce
Another runner in the night    (fading)

Madman drummers bummers,
Indians in the summer,
With a teenager diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps
As the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder my shoulder,
feeling kinda older,
I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasin', sneezin' and wheezin,
the calliope crashed to the ground
(pickup)
the calliope crashed to the ground
(chorus)
Some silicon sister with a manager mister
told me I got what it takes.
She said I'll turn you on sonny to something strong
play the song with the funky break
And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the
weather charts see if it was safe outside
And little Early Pearly came by in her curly-wurly
and asked me if i needed a ride
(pickup)
asked me if i needed a ride
(chorus)
Bridge:
She got down but she never got tight
She's gonna make it to the night
She's gonna make it through the night
(break with soul-stirring solo)
Oh momma that's where the fun is
But momma that's where the fun is
Momma always told me not to look
in the eye of the sun
But momma that's where the fun is
(chop sticks variation)
Some brimestone-baritone, anti-cyclone Rolling Stone
Preacher from the East,
says dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone
that's where they expect it least
It's a new mown chaperone standing in the corner
watching the young girls dance
and some  fresh sown moonstone messing with his frozen zone,
only reminding him of romance
(pickup)
and the calliope crashed to the ground
(Chorus)
(Chorus and First Verse)
Now Scott with the sling-shot finally found a tender spot
and throws his lover in the sand
and some blood-shot forget-me-not
said daddy's within ear shot save the buckshot, turn up the band
(repeat Verse 2 "Silicon sister with a manager....")
(bridge)

Can you find the one that has "wake up like a sweetheart" in those lyrics now please?  I've been singing it like that for years and would hate to think I've been singing it wrong.  :D

I always thought it was "wrapped like sweetheart in the roller in the night." which seems to actually make more sense than the real lyrics!

I guess that's a drug culture rock-n-roll lyricist for ya.
