Today I went to burn some files that I needed to take with me, and found I couldn't burn a CD. The burner is not listed in the device manager / control manager or anywhere. The burner is an old HP 6020 .. their site does not list the drivers for this burner.
Any idea on how I can get the burner back home?

It's possible that your aspi layer needs to be updated. First does the SCSI card show in Device Manager? When you boot does the SCSI bios detect the CD-Burner?
-
I dont think I see the burner being listed in the startup ..
Yes its listed in the Device Manager

Just to be clear, Your computer is off, and you turn it on,
generally First to start is POST (memory check), then your scsi should kick in and say:
_____________________________ ___________-
|ADAPTEC BLAH BLAH BLAH
|press control A to enter blah blah blah
|
|Device list:
|
|ID# Device Name
|2 Hellpacket CD Toaster XYZ

No I dont see what your saying ..

Do you see the scsi bios at all?
Can you open the CD-ROM (press the eject button)
Yes, okay, then open the case make sure the Ribbon cable is in nice and tight, and isn't nicked.
Put a cd in and listen for it to spin up, (even if it isn't dectected by 98 it should still spin up if the mechanical portion is working...

Yes I can open and close .. can't tell tho if its spining tho .. fans to loud.

I dont see the SCSI BIOS at all ... but it is listed in the device manager as working ok (adaptec scsi card)
IRQ 10 ..Adaptec

Try removing it from device manager
shut down computer - remove SCSI controller
reboot
make sure no trace of controller is in device manager
then shut down
clean contacts of card with pencil eraser (lightly rubbing)
stick card back in
reboot
you need to see the SCSI BIOS or else the computer doesn't know its there - no matter what windows says
did you add anything lately that maybe conflicting with SCSI card at boot-up? IRQ shared? Try different slot if you can.

No Joy! I guess the only thing to do now is to thank every one that help with suggestions.
I removed the device from device manager, took out the card, cleaned the contacts and reinstalled and rebooted and reloaded the drivers . Didn't work. :(
Do you'all know of anyone who has a old burner for sell ... my old burner was 2X .. so any thing would have to be better..
Once again thanks .

dude, head over to http://www.newegg.com and get a lite-on burn for 40$ I have a 32X write from them and it works great with no problems.
-
Wow ... didn't know that they were that cheap
I just ordered a Lite-On CDRW 40X12X48 for $48.99 including shipping. :) It used to take me close 30 minutes to burn a full CD at 2X ... I wonder how long it will take me at 40X :D
Thanks Dingbat for the tip and all your help.
