Title: How about Contour lines for GV map?
Post by: JBA on January 10, 2003, 01:34:44 PM
Once in a GV and you pull up the clipboard how about it showing elevation contour lines. This would allow you to plan your route so not to drive up/down to steep of a hill.
I would have to assume that any military would have contour maps in their GV's

Map size currently is 256x256 (I think). Don't think you can draw anything like that (readable and covering the whole map) in that size.

Bigger map size would be nice.

(and a modification of the map chooser, currently it isn't easy to use, because it only shows three lines at the same time and partly hides behind the buttons on the clipboard).

I would love to have an option for a topo map (either in a GV or a plane).   I would also like more maps with topo features..(I am working on some...still figuring out the TE ). I am a geography major so if anyone needs topo maps or dem (digital elevation models) I have a decent collection. :D

p.s.  this is my first post so don't trash me too bad :D

The topography of a battlezone zone is possibly the most studied information on a map for a groundpounder. Being able to mask your approach to a base from the prying eyes of the guy in that blimp over enemy bases using that kind of info would only be fair.

Generating a bitmap that had the topo lines would be all you need.  you could add it to the drop-down list on the clipboard.  Since the add-on bitmaps can't be zoomed, you'd have to break up the maps into sections to be usable.

This would be an awesome addition, kinda like Acid's field maps and the fuel charts.

Punt.

I think more detailed maps would be a nice addition, or possibly more maps of specific areas - so that the arena map would be a general overview, but you'd look at a specific sheet for wherever you're flying.

I'd also be interested in an arena option to turn off the plane icon on the clipboard map, so that some real navigation would be required. I'm assuming that i'm alone in wanting this? I know the furballers would hate it, but it could make the CT/Mission Arena more interesting.

All good ideas, but consider these points:

1. Terrain resolution is one-half mile... meaning each polygon is a half-mile long. Unless you're up for driving an hour or more, that's not very many polys to put between yourself and the enemy.

2. The CM Terrain Team has experimented a little with this... see the example pic attached below.

The contour lines here work out to be roughly 500 feet of elevation, and it's pretty tight as it is.
There is no way a vehicle is going to climb 500 feet in any reasonable amount of time or distance. A contour separation that would actually be useful would have so many lines so close together, it would be an almost solid-black map

Still, they are all great ideas. It could be a great option someday.

ps. cynikal... the TE is pretty easy once you've done it a couple of times. Feel free to ask about anything.
