Title: msconfig "startup list"
Post by: snafu on January 11, 2003, 08:31:10 AM
Hi All,
If I run "msconfig" and go to the "startup" tab I find I have a lot of redundant references to programs which have been loaded at some time or another during startup. Is there anyway I can remover the entries I have unchecked to "cleanup" the list? Many programs are listed several times as Windows updates or program re installs etc seem to add new ones rather than re enabling the original also some programs I no longer have/use are also still displayed. No Biggy just wondered if I could clean up the list.

Thanks in advance

start/run type "sysedit".

Your boot files will open up in a text editor . Find the entries and delete *only those you have disabled in MSconfig*.

Thanks for the replys guys,
I assumed they would be found in sysedit but was unsure of exactly which file. I'm still a bit unsure of where they all are. I have found some entries which seem to tie in which are now listed as "norun" or "noload" but a lot are still unaccounted for.

Great sites, thanks I had already used one of them to do the initial cleanup but the others have been added to my favourites as well.

I'll wade through them all and try to locate the ones I can't find but there is a very good chance that as Arnie once said "I'll Be Back"! for further guidence.

One other quickie... I have always assumed the minimum in the task list was "systray & explorer". I have been told "systray" is not actually required as it is only used for Volume control etc. I took a chance and disabled that as well, :eek no problems so far but was it OK to do this?

[EDIT] Perhaps I should have mentioned at the start.....
W98 SE latest service packs etc.
DX9

Thanks again

IT's OK to remove systray, and unless you're running older DOS programmes, you can trash autoexec.bat and config sys as well.
