Ok, after upgrading from win ME to 2k, i've found some of it to be a disappointing. For example, i've found the 2000 means the amount errors in it.
But besides that everthing seems to be running ok.
Just one thing though, how do i turn off the built in messenger service?
Keep getting spammed by porno adds during my game time.........

Ben,..go and take a look in the Technical Forums at my sticky post.
Have you done the upgrades/patches from MS WEB site?

Install Service Pack 2
-
i have service pack 3 installed, downloaded most of the updates, that seems to have fixed the instabilaty issues
my main question was about the messenger service (not msnm btw)

Read skuzzy's post in the tech support forum. You need to disable Microsoft Messenger from the services menu.

BTW.. here's the instructions for XP.. pretty much the same as 2k:
To turn off the messenger service in XP:
[list=1]- Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
- Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel and go to Administrative Tools.
- Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
- Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
- Change the startup type to Disable (see an example).

posted that before i got round to reading it, i think i did it:)
thanks
btw, you should proburly add messenger that list, seems rather useless TBH
btw btw, which of those processes in your list is the one that turns off dial up connection?
Also, what do you mean by 'not recommended'? Not recommended to leave it on, or not recommended to turn it off?

The versions of 2K I have do not add the instant messenger, that is why it is not on the list.
The list is really intended to get people looking at the, more often than not, many things that should not be running by default.
Hmm,..non of the ones I listed should have turned off dial-up, unless MS has made more changes to the later versions of 2K (very possible). I will check that further.
"Not recommended" means, in the context of the data, to turn it off if possible.
