Title: CFS-III ~ IL2,, and AH! Ahhh~
Post by: rv6 on January 13, 2003, 06:08:54 AM
Hey all..
First of all, I just read beet1e's post.  Boy, is he DEAD-NUTZ ON!

Like beet1e said,, I too have been a flight sim'r for nearly 20 years now.  Started w/ Falcon v 1.00 on an 8088.  Seen them ALL!

Nextly..
Having extra time, (the Net was down, no AH!), this weekend I said; "Oh what the hey" and bought MS-CFS-III and IL2.

CFS-III was "crashy", the views were circa 1990'ish, the gun sounds were all similar to the clickity-clickity .303 sound in AH,, it was choppy at all levels, yada, yada, yada,,

You have got to be kidding me!!  (Is all I'ma gonna' say).

I fly real planes.  And the views and flight models in AH are REAL!!  It's the real deal without the sickening G'force!

I personally would not accept CFS-III free as a gift and waste the hard-drive space.  IL2 was a little better,, but hell, why waste the time eating a Blimpies Sub, when you can have a steady diet of lobster with HT's AH ?

My 2 cents...

Re: CFS3, a lot of guys on this board advised me against buying it and saved me AUD$100 bucks.

Im still curious about it though...... I just love flight sims I guess :)

I too was CFS3-curious.....checked it out (broke a few laws doing so), uninstalled it, got rid of the evidence. At least they tried to create a flight-sim, thats more than I can say for myself.

Microsoft (aka Microtoejam) software (games aspect) suck oscar

CFSIII was released as a POS buggy horrible recreation of wwii combat/flight.

Micro$oft has always released toejamty products relying on the general public to improve their shoddy code/ideas/product.

Il2 Sturmovik, was built on a passion to make the Most "releastic" wwii eastern conflict Air war,..by home computing standards but at the same time hold the ability to be "fun" aka game...

Il2 is simply the BEST offline wwii Aircraft simulation for home computers. It by far shames Microsoft's combat flight simulator series in many facets ranging from Attention to historical accuacy, detail of flight modeling, graphics of aircraft inteirors etc.

Its ONLINE portion is far better then Microsofts, much less laggy, as well as generally more user friendly to get up and running. Also being the better product,. Il2 is played online much more via the "Hyberlobby" online game connection program.

AS far as aces High vs Il2, il2 simply puts it to shame in almost every category with the exception of the networking (online portion), as well as some of the Viewing options (ability to reposition your "virtual" head in 3d space in the cockpit.)

Il2 does not have any "dedicated" server running at a location crunching net/packet/translation problems so users get an "equal" connection display when "seeing" others online.

Off line you can display 32 different aircraft (il2 detail, without a slowdown of performance).. and all of this on a classic athlon 1.4ghz Thunderbird /geforce3.

online, as long as you have a good connection you can have the same.

Hmmmmm,

I went over to a friends and tried CFS3. Sure glad
I didnt buy it.

IL2 looks nice and can handle up to 32 offline?
32? Stone age. Heck, I get 32 on my 6 all the time. I'm sure glad we have 600+ in AH. Every once in a while someone even clears my 6!

Still if you don't know any better those might be considered good home sims.

Perhaps we're falling down on the job in getting the word out? I have a friend from work coming over near the end of the week to check it out. I have a neighbor, that has since moved away, that I got interested and is currently flying on AH.

Why settle for second best?

My son got CFS3 for Christmas (not my decision) and since I've loaded it onto my box for a test.  FM has alot to be desired, but I'm enjoying the dynamic campaign, (and so is my son).  Kinda like a moped, fun for tooling around in, but not serious transportation (unless you live on Bermuda)

I really enjoyed a spell offline in IL-2 over the christmas break. I like the graphics, the handling of the planes and the gunnery takes a bit of learning (although which is more realistic out of IL-2 and AH I don't know I'm not saying one is better than the other) I quite liked CFSII so looked forward to CFSIII for the dynamic campaign, the updated graphics and the ETO setting. It was a real dissapointment to me, the graphics IMO were no better (often worse) than IL-2 and the FM in CFSIII seems to lack any stall characteristics. It runs like a dog on my system and although my system is no high end greyhound it still runs IL-2 well. If I were to recommend a boxed flight sim for someone to buy right now I could not recommend CFSIII but would definately recommend IL-2.

At the end of the day as good as IL-2 is it does not give the same joy of flyign in an MMOG enviroment like Aces High does but it does offer so much. Why some people can only play one game is beyond me and I'm not just talking about anyone in the AH community specifically but other communities too that turn their chosen sim into some kind of religion and would not tolerate even so much as a mention of another sim. CFSIII/IL-2 are no competition for AH or WB and vice versa so why not get the best of both worlds?

As far as simulations goes CFS3 meets some needs for me but on the other hand is not all that great. The campaign is different but soon gets boring.

The one thing I will cheer for is the graphics. HT has done a pretty good job on cloud banks but Microsoft hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

CFS3 multiplayer was extremely lacking. It is too bad the campaign was not part of the MP package. Then they may have had something.

FM well I think that will always be about preference. The flight model seemed very different then what we see in AH. I do not fly in RL so I do not know really which one, AH or CFS3, offers a more realistic FM, but in my mind each game offers it's own benefits and subtractors.

In the long run CFS3 will be something that if you do like it...you'll pull out of your shelf once or twice a year. We know that no real updates will come about since it is Microsoft but the modders might have a hay day with it.

It all depends on users CPU.

I had 64 plane bomber raid with 100+ flak guns over Berlin.  Its possible and I didn't see any "limit".
