Post by: AKIron on January 13, 2003, 01:21:10 PM: Just did a bit of research on this phenomenon. Best I can tell is that the "flip" occurs over a period of about a thousand years. Not likely to significantly affect those living today but could be a real pain for generations to come.

Nah, we'll just have to move all the Northern hemisphereans to the South hemisphere and the South to the north. Hope the planes and ships moving them don't get lost in the Bermuda triangle that will increase in size a thousand fold due to this phenomenon.

When it happens (and apparently we're coming up on it), large amounts of radiation may cause us to go the way of the dinosaurs...

We're either screwed, or won't be much affected by this.

I dunno about you, but in the time of a crisis I can't forsee myself eating or drinking TP... but I could find a reasonable way to wipe my ass...

Seems it would depend on the direction the poles point when they flip as to how significant the loss of protection from gamma rays (at least from our sun) becomes. If they point along our path around the sun rather than at the sun then we still have a magnetic field protecting us.

or do you think the new poles will be fixed geographically and rotate 360 daily?

When the two poles reverse... dunno how they do it... I'd assume that the field would significantly change or shrink in size while the poles change position.

The article mentions deadspots in the Earth that have started to occur recently and are getting bigger... this is saying to me that the poles aren't staying perfectly opposite one another, and may be changing position in such a way that it's not a simple flip, but instead are maybe moving through each other? (I dunno if that's even possible... but this isn't necessarily two solid magnetic objects acting against each other either.. but is a single fluid

EDIT #3: Seems most sources agree that while the magnetic field is getting weaker, the reverse/flip won't happen for another thousand years or more...
