Title: The magic D-hog (or other stories of cool plane damage)
Post by: Preon1 on January 13, 2003, 12:31:14 PM
I'm a big fan of the F4U-D and just recently flew a sortie where I was fortunate enough to have both flaps blown off with no other damage.  Top speed, acceleration, climb rate, turning radius, and roll rate all improved by a HUGE amount.  Almost makes me want to ask my flight engineer to take the dang things off before my next sortie.

Has this happened to anybody else?

Last tour I shot the flaps off of a Corsair while flying a Spit IX and he's kept on going.  I was then killed by an LA-7.  Now I fly the Corsair.

I rarely fly the dhog but have discovered the joys of the F4U-4 this tour. What a fun plane.

I must fly the wrong Corsair.  I never lose just a flap but the whole wing!

If you like the -1D, you'll love the -1A even better (although not as much for ATG)

The -1A makes a great bomber buster, particularly above 15k.  I use it when doing fleet defense work.  For offensive operations, the -1D is the better choice of the non-perk Corsairs.  I've only flown the C model once and was impressed, but I tend to make too many one-way trips and don't wanna lose my precious 10 perk points.

I had all but my rudder shot off by a n1k and managed to ditch it by careful use of power and rudder and by NOT dropping my gear.

I once ditched a c47 when I had my vert. stab shot off.

Yesterday I had my vert stabilizer shot out while trying to land on a vulched strip. The plane flipped completely around and and hit landing gear down and destroyed the gear but I landed on the tarmac so it was all good.

The -1A is a monster and few realize it's faster than all hogs save the F4U-4. I can't afford the perked rides for a while, but they're worth the cash!

Drain the LW first and watch that baby roll!

Preon,

Don't think I ever had both shot off.

What kind of speed are you talking about?

Title: Goon stories anyone?
Post by: Meatwad on January 13, 2003, 07:29:44 PM
On the AK map, was in a goon heading to enemy base. One got throug the CAP and wasted my entire tail section before he was wasted by another rook. I was still able to fly straight and level for a few minutes without no tail, but I had to be a tard and see if I could maneuver it.  I went down faster then an airplane made out of concrete. I have never been able to do that again, but it was really impressive to see flying (no screenshots though, D-OH :(  )

I think I win, actually. I bounced off the cliff twice before coming to a stop.

This tour I landed my c47 without a vertical stab at a vbase and got the capture :)

I don't believe you

but actually, I remember bouncing off the runway so hard in a B26 that both wings fell off...  it's a tough plane

Yeah, actually I think I'm up to 1,500 perks in a fighter or something like that, maybe more.  I quite counting because, you're right, I'll probably never be able to blow that many in a single tour anyway. :)

Getting 2 or more perks per flight, even when getting shot down, is one of the benefits of flying the "second string" planes in the MA.  The FW190A8 rings up perkies like a pinball machine rings up scores! :)

I was flying a 262 with no wing tips. I was able to cruise 75mph faster than the charts and was able to landed safely after making a couple high speed passes at a bomber formation.

This is evidence that the flight model is perfect.

Can we talk about the corsair performance post damage? it's cool to see how great all of you (think you) are, but this IS about the corsair, yes? :D

I once crashed a perfectly good typhoon with absolutely no damage whatsoever. In fact, I pull this impossible feat off quite regularly by lawndarting like a moron on a pretty regular basis. I think I have you all beat!

I fly the Hog a fair bit and never had any performance increase with damage.  In fact it is usually a noticable decrease in performance even losing one flap or alieron.

There is nothing cooler than a P47 all shot up and RTB.

...:)

I too have ahd increased performance from missing flaps but it was a long time ago.

Here a pic of my boston fron a TOD with no elevators, engine or left aileron. I lost the right one soon after as well as rudder and it still flew, only u couldnt point it any where. The only thing that took me out of the sky was a zeke:)

Ps u can see bombs dropping on a field and i actually took out radar:D

in past I have seen screenshots in other forum of a Corsair making safe RTB with both wingtips gone... But it was a loooong time ago... :)

And with that A20 picture posted in my post above....

i lost the rudder and both stabs during recovering from divebombing attack when I missjudged my altitude and speed.... Anyway i dropped the load and flew over 2 sectors to friendly base and landed the crippled A20, gear down and on the runway... :)
