I ran into this site the week before last looking for doc. on American troops using German tank during WW2. Someone asked about this in another thread. I still haven't found documentation on it. But as I said in that thread I know it happened but it was Highly discouraged. Vist the memorials in Europe. There is one in Bastone that tells a story about an American tank ace capturing a panther and using it until he could get his M4A4e8 out of a field. He never got his own tank out of the field by the way. It was hit and destroyed by several panzerfaust rounds. He used the panther until he ran out of ammunition and then abondoned it. I don't remember the guy's name and I have not been able to find anything on the net about it to include the War memorial's site.

Panzer Song Link for all Panzer Lovers :)
here is the "Panzerlied" sound track as sung in the 1966 movie "Battle of the Bulge". Don't leave the vehicle hanger without it! IMO this is one of the greatest pieces of military music ever

Uhmmm even though im german i hardly can understand what these guys are singing.

I dont think they recruited native German speakers to play the tank commanders :)

Lyrics:
don't remember the rest ATM...
Bad english translation:
Wether it's storming or the sun shines
Wether the day's glowing hot or the night cold like ice
The faces are covered in dust, but happy is our heart
Our Tank races through the stormwind

German Lyrics....its good to have a mp3 of the song to sing along with
Ob's sturmt oder schneit,
Ob die sonne uns lacht,
der tag gluhend heiss
Oder eiskalt die nacht,
Bestaubt sind die gesichter
Doch froh ist unseer sinn,
Ja unser sinn
Es braust unser Panzer,
Im sturmwind dahin.
Wenn vor uns ein feindlicher,
Panzer erscheint,
Wird vollgas gegeben,
Und ran an den Fiend!
Was gilt denn unser leben
Fur unsres Reiches heer,
Ja Reiches heer?
Fur Duetschland zu sterben
Ist uns hochste ehr.
Und lasst uns im stich
Einst das treulose gluck
Und kehren wir nacht mehr
Zur heimat zuruck
Trifft uns die todeskugel
Ruft uns das Schicksal ad
Ja schicksal ab
Dann ist unser Panzer
Ein ehernes grab
Mit donnernden motoren
So schnell wie der blitz
Dem fiende entgegen
Im Panzer geschutzt
Voraus den kameraden
Im Kampf ganz allein
Steh'n wir allein
So stossen wir tief
In due feindlichen reihn
Mit sperren und tanks
Halt der gegner uns auf
Und fahren nicht drauf
Und droh'n vor uns

With that same mp3 in hand....maybe you dont want to sing in german so....
The English Translation
If there's a storm or it snows
Or the sun smiles on us
The day is burning hot
Or the night icy cold
Dusty are the faces
But joyful is our mind
Joyful our mind;
Our tank roars ahead
Within the stormwind
When a hostile tank
appears ahead of us
Full throttle is given
And we close with the foe!
It's not our life we value
For the army of our realm
Army of our realm
For Germany to die
Is honor most high
And if we are abandoned
By that unfaithful luck
And if we don't return
To our homeland again
If a bullet strikes us down
If our fate calls on us
Yes calls on us
Then our tank will give us
A metal grave
With thundering engines
Fast as a lightining bolt
The enemy engaging
Within our armour plates
Ahead of our comrades
In the battle all alone
We stand alone
That's how we strike deep
Into the enemy's ranks
With obstacles and tanks
The foe blocks our path
We laugh about it
And simply pass them by
And if ahead guns threaten
Hidden in the yellow sand
In the yellow sand
We seek out our way
That no one else found

Kinda hard to Mombo to. :D

Panzerlied is great!
Some of my favorites are also:
Panzer Rollen In Afrika Vor
Unser Rommel
U-Boot Lied
Good old guilt inducing ww2 german songs.. ;)
-
I found it in .wav file format:
http://www.angelfire.com/ok/panzerkampfwagon/pzsong.wav
Now you can save it as your Panzer engine start-up sound. :P

i already had one as my panzer start sound lol

If you recall the great 1969 movie "Battle of Britain", at the beginning, after Dunkirk, when Kesselring is driving around LW bases reviewing the planes and crews, a great (LW?) march is playing. I seem recall somewhere that the march is named "Aces High" [like a certain game :)], but havent been able to find that particular music anywhere on the 'net Can anyone tell me if the march is correctly named and if/where I can find it to download?

I have a number of WWII German songs in MP3 format, Panzer Lied among them.

From IMDB.Com comes this clue:
Original Music by
Ron Goodwin
William Walton (cue "Battle In the Air")
I did a search on "Battle In The Air" with a cross-reference to the composers and found this:
http://www.musicweb.uk.net/classrev/2000/jan00/battle.htm
with this interesting blurb in the description:
"When it comes to the music depicting the Luftwaffe, Goodwin wins hands down with a splendidly idiomatic Teutonic march 'Aces High' replete with oompah brass and glockenspiel."

here are several 30 second segments from "Aces High" and other scores in the film; playing the "Battle of Britain" theme you can almost hear the alarm bell ringing and the Merlin engines roaring to life

Cool! Now to figure out how to convert that RealAudio to .wav format... any ideas anybody?
-
convert it? I cant even save it! Dunno if it because the server will only stream it to discourage copying, or because I only have the free real Audio player
-
heres a utility that purports to be able to convert mp3's to wavs
