Title: When we forget this is just a game...
Post by: akak on January 17, 2003, 01:51:51 PM
There a few of us (myself included) that sometimes forget this is just a game.  Whenever that happens, I read The Scavenger's articles that puts things in perspective as well as a smile on my face.

For some of you that don't know/remember The Scavenger, he was an old Air Warrior flyer that passed away but left us some truely funny and enjoyable articles on his experiences in the 'flight sim world' of combat.

T.NAUGHTON [SCAVENGER] at 23:36 EDT

     I GO DIVING DOWN 1

I think my handle is very far out. That's cool or hot or bad depending on your generation bias. It comes with a vision of myself in AW. I saw myself cruising around like the Red Baron watching for victims. Since I am new I would cruise the skies of Europe looking for wounded warriors trying to get home. Engine smoking, control cables half shot away, aileron hanging flipping back and forth like Heston in Battle of Midway.

Then down would come the SCAVENGER preying on the helpless getting some easy kills building up his score, becoming a DWEEB to be reckoned with.

Now the name is great. The problem is OLE SCAVENGER is getting his butt shot off roaming the skies of Europe. The only smoke I am see un is coming out the back view of my aircraft. The only control cables half shot away, ailerons flipping seemed to be on MY airplane. Something is wrong with my plan. I was thinking about changing my handle but DEAD DUCK is already taken and then someone might take SCAVENGER and I would never earn it back.

I know I'll change it to SC-avenger (Southern California Avenger). Maybe I could avenge other DWEEBS from the Southern California area. I could stay up really late when you EDT guys are very tired and then I can come diving down. hee hee hee hee

There has to be some way to make this handle work!! Surely I can figure some way where I get to come diving down. This sure isn't like SWOTL where I used to just come diving down alot. But you just wait, one of these days I am going figure out how to come diving down again and then just watch out!!!

I know I've forgotten it's just a game, when I duck while avoiding a collision.

No you didnt. You slammed on the Aw community.
Believe it or not, its still a community even if its displaced.

Backpeddle all you want, we can read and understand.

Yeah the game is gone and so is Scav
Thanks for the reminder.

Scav's stuff has been around for a long time and the great thing about his posts is that they let you know that it is ok to be a dweeb and kill yourself repeatedly because eventually you are going to get your chance to GO DIVING DOWN!!!

That was Scav's codeword for BnZ attack, or perhaps any situation where hs guns or bombs were pointed at an enemy.  That is what we all fly for, after all.

And it was Scav who asked the immortal question that has crossed all of our minds at least once - "If the bombs are armed and you put them right in the center of that big carrier deck do you get credit for the hits if the aircraft is still attached to the bombs?"

Scav, we hardly knew ye but you left a lot behind for all of us

RIP, ace

X2Lee....you might want to take a step away from the computer and not assume EVERY post on thes boards are meant to flame or belittle someone else's comments...

There was ABSOLUTELY NO MALICE towards the AW community or the Gentileman named... HUN and the squadron known as -=Most Wanted=- hated to see AW go as much as you or anyone else. Hell, we were the top squad in NUMEROUS consecutive campaigns and we LIVED FOR AW.  Hun was just reflecting back as if saying "ahhh the good ole days...those times are gone unfortunately...as well as the stories that Scavenger told. Its a shame that they are both gone..." (maybe a not-so good choice of words) but thats what I got out of HUN's comment...

I never knew Scavenger and it is a tragic thing that happened to him. HUN would NEVER disrespect anyones unfortunate passing.

I can understand how Hun's comment can be taken the wrong way,  But in no way it is meant to be malicious. I don't know if the defensive stance is from the general "at each others throat-ness" recently on the BBS....

As you can see, the MW in front of our "handle" is the same. I'm not only a squadmate but a close friend of HUN. I guess I got to this post before he could recant...but here I am and I think it needed to be said before it gets outta hand.

I'm not sure what your CPID was in AW or where you flew,  but we flew RR Euro on Bz side if that helps or refreshes your memory. :)

I didn't think he was going for malice, it's just sad to see it that way...(as it's sad they are both gone)

I was just kidding with HUN cause the threads intention was to be uplifting =P

HUN's not a badguy.

JMHO but perhaps Hun could learn to express himself with a little more tact.  Not uncommon at all for folks to NOT realize they "sound" like buttheads... which was my initial take (granted the atmosphere around here doesn't help).
