Title: Important Friendlies!
Post by: qts on January 19, 2003, 07:53:21 PM
We were on the NDIsles map this afternoon, trying to recapture Base 33. But the goons (at least 4) kept getting shot down. Why? Because no-one bothered to protect them.

Guys, if you want to capture a base, protect the goon!

Protecting a goon is damned near impossible.
Often the best one can do is kill the goonhunter after he gets the goon.

i was 4 of the goons you're talking about, first goon had successful drop, buildings came back up while paratroopers were goin in, next 2 flights i was wacked by the same pony who had like 5 friendlies chasin him, fourth goon was chased by anouther pony who was a very bad pilot, dodged his fire 3 times and he got 1 engine, made a good drop that captured the field, i was very upset after those back to back kills, but i brought back the fourth goon anyway, i play to have fun and it is silly to get upset, i believe it was dakduck who was merrily getting blasted as well, to all who helped, I LOVE THIS STUPID GAME

As my esteemed colleague Innomin8 stated above....it is almost impossible to protect a goon if the goon-killer is hell bent on killing your goon.  Most goon killers will fly straight at the goon regardless of whether you are on his 6 or not and try to land the lucky shot to bring the troops down.  I know this, because.....

its what I do when I feel like shooting helpless troop carriers.  :D

Actually this brings up a good point:  perhaps friendlies driving C-47s or M3s have a highlighted icon to other friendlies?  If I'm a goon driver i try to announce over range a few times what I'm in and what I'm doing, but it would be a nice visual aid if you could spot them in a crowd.

When trying to fly in under radar, do you really want the added attention of radar blips for your escort. Maybe I'm a putz, but I steer clear of friendly goonies so I don't attract nme attention to them?

When hunting goonies I look for the low dots not appearing on radar, then it's dinner time.

If ya want the escort I'll be there, just thought it was appreciated, but not desired.

Fancy there is a way to do that.

When I am in a goon I tell everyone to ....

Hey Im Goon for XXX  type .wingman TG12

Then the ones that care can type that in and see me better....give it a shot might work!

I also relish my C47 time and agree, if the goon killer REALLY wants you...nothing much can be done to guarentee it's survival.
I also stay low and scrape my goons belly on the dirt when traveling to the target and do not like the company [ flag ] of close escort. Keep reporting your position and maybe have someone '.wingman' you for the security blanket.
I've found camoflage works too :)  Lately when I get close to the target I change from a C47 to an R4D :D

fuzeman, one and only pilot of THE fuzegoon.

[ Oh yea, when I change into my R4D I'm 'Ready 4 Drop' ]

Snocone wasn't the only goon that night - I tried a run. But there were plenty of aircraft around, except they were all in vulch mode. In this case it made good and proper sense to escort the goon.

It is tough to protect Goons, the other day while taking part in one of ROCSTAR's missions. While outbound NOE I cartwheeled into the sea with a 10 for artistic impression, yes that was me!

So getting airborne again and seeing a goon I decided to do my patriotic duty and escort him.  After buzzing him a couple of times to reassure him he was now safe:rolleyes:  I circled lazily above keeping my eyes peeled. Only to hear an urgent check six from somewhere. It was all over in seconds. I never even saw the attacker who was obviously NOE and out looking for goons.  So much for my protection :(  I felt guilty for all of ten seconds and then went off to vulch some crippled rooks.

I think perhaps the best escort might be something equally slow with rearward facing guns, a TBM or B17 maybe. We all know how tough B17's can be when they want to be.

Generally though I think the best defence for the goon is to scrape paint all the way over. Although once spotted it's all over. I caught one like that previously too. The only give away was a small dot in the distance which I investigated. It was all too easy after that.

It's tough being a goon!

All the blame doesn't deserve to go to the C47 pilot or the guys trying to protect him.  Either can be of poor quality and the mission is likely to fail.  It is almost impossible to protect a goon near the deck since it has very little margin to maneuver and stopping someone diving at 500mph+ is nearly impossible.

People really underappreciate a good goon driver though.  It's not about being able to fly at 50ft or less AGL.  It's also about being able to force an enemy fighter to miss on that first pass, since his second pass is easier to stop.  it's also about a C47 pilot picking a correct route and timing, staying out of the way but close enough to come in at any time.  Most goon guys want to rush right up and park next to the town, waiting while it's being bombed.  There is nothing you can do to protect those guys as they expose themselves to danger and get their rewards.

Fighters really need to set a barrier patrol away from the C47 though... if you don't even try to stop the enemies from getting in then it really makes no difference because they know eventually you have to fly the goon right up to the town.
