Title: Cooperation...Where is it?
Post by: muckmaw on November 15, 2001, 01:35:00 PM
No, this is not a whine, and though I'm an ex-Awer, I've been on AH long enough to give the newer guys a helpful hint or two.

By the way, Thanks to Jacnife for showing me how to turn on my headlights last night. (Alt-F4) Can't believe I fell for that one.

Anyway, I've been a dedicated Bomber/Goon pilot for 6 months now. I log in, ask what needs bombing, or who needs a goon where, and my reply is usually this,

"_____________________________ ______"
Or some useless gibberish about nothing of importance.

I've noticed some pilots are paid temendous respect, and garner the most attention. (Hazed, Skurj, Jacnife, etc)

My question is, to the senior pilots, how can I, and non-fghter jocks like me, assist more. I'm sick of making lone bomb runs over A44, only to watch it come back up. Or trying to sneak in a goon, only to get no fighter coverage.

What's the best way to lend my service to my country?

Also, how the hell do you squelch the other countries chatter? I don't need to hear each Bish/rooks diatribe everytime he pings a buff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The reality is that probably 75% of players don't give a crap.  They just want to take off, HO somebody in their La-7, die, repeat.

However there are guys who do give a crap.  How do you find them?

1.  Check the mission planner.  Go to the map room, click viewer, and see what's up.  2nd TAF is usually running missions for Bish and Assassins run a lot of missions for Rooks.

2.  Join a squad.  We are recruiting.  Click on the link below if you are interested.   :)

3.  Networking.  If you hang around long enough and go out of your way to be sociable on the chat, eventually you get to know the guys who do the kind of things you are interested in doing.

PS You can't hear other countries' chat.  You can only hear your country (Ch 2 (global), Ch 3 (local), Ch 5 (mission)), your squaddies (Ch 4), and the public (all countries) chat on Ch 1.  To squelch Ch 1 just enter ".squelch 1" like a chat message.

Thanks for the information, Funked. I am part of a squad, but my squad nights are only 2 times a week, so I find myself flying indie alot. I will use the other options you mentioned, though. Thank you.

Hey Muck, MuckMaw in the arena, right?  Then we've flown the same airspace   :)

Cooperation is a matter of timing, it seems.  I've asked where to buff and most of the time, someone points out where the frontline battle is and I bring ordinance to it.  Sometimes, as was the case with A41 yesterday afternoon, I'd bring bombs to assist, only to discover a high fighter cap defending it.  Opps.

Then there are the "Can I be your Tailgunner" folks who, as luck has it, wanders away from the computer while 262s, P-51s and pretty much the entire Bish air force are on your 6.  LOL....

Quite simply, find out who the buff folks are.  Wrongto and I link up every now and then, and when Jacnife isn't whining or polluting the channel buffer with his daily rants, he's a pretty good buff driver.  (Shh, don't you tell him I said something *nice* about him.  He won't beleive you anyways!)  AmReo is a real good bomber pilot too, among others whom I can't recall right now.

But its not just buffs sticking together (though it helps).  Your right, Knights don't always stick together real well, and get divided really easy.  We're an interesting clan, whenever we have the most numbers, we do our worst!

Look me up when you are online, I'll drive buff with you!  Now if we can lure some fighter CAP....

Oh hell, BD5, we've flown togther on a few very satisfying missions. I usually follow your lead when I see you on, and I am getting to know Amreo. He seems like a real teams player.

Where the hell's Skurj been, anyway?

I'll see ya up tonight.

Hmm, I dunno where he's been, he posts here, doesnt he?

Yea, I love the Arado.  Lately they are getting pretty shot up but they are still my favorite ride.

Skurj is fun to chatter with, and I love to disagree with him (and Moose).  Its hard to detail in text but I hope those two know I'm just yanking their chain....very few messages are sent without a smirk on my face.

(Moose, yer a dang fine cheerleader  :)  While everyone on Channel 1 is bemoaning "invalid weapon set", loosing perks to perk planes exploding on the runway or tanks exploded after hitting bushes, Moose valiantly posts "I'm happy the way the game is, despite it all" (or something along those lines...) Where's my tar and feathers?   :D )

Cya tonight!

I tried asking this a couple of times and quit for the same reason muck.  I’m not sure that it’s total indifference though.  It might be that most of the players online are not really sure what they need and fear being the one to say… “Hey, we need this here, that there” especially if the designated location ends up killing the person asking.  We’ve all seen it happen.  Only to have the replies of “I was killed, why didn’t anyone help me”.

I don’t want to ask for something that I need now only to find the situation has completely changed 15-20 minutes later and ends up getting the poor buff driver killed on my information.

As far as networking, funkedup has a point.  The unfortunate problem is that if you’re an introvert this isn’t going to help much.  About the only open communications I use are the “ckeck-6” and SITREP’s of what’s being hit.

You know AA down, fuel down, amo down, VH coming up, FP on field, etc.  I’m not sure that it helps or not but it’s something I’d like to know arriving to target so I do it.

My thoughts anyway.  Cya up.

Target situation would help a great deal, Zep.

Unfortunately, it's hard to come by. I usually call out my type, load out and destination, and if the target has cap, I ask what needs bombing. Unfortunaltey, the fighter jocks are usually too busy fighting to answer me, so It's alot of guess work as to what I'm going to hit.

On sight recon is great when you can get it.

hehe, Raub, my favorite time to squelch is when two of those guys get going on comms, feeding off one another. "Our guys are so stupid, they don't blah, blah, blah" and "Yeah, we woulda had A23 if they only blah, blah, blah..."

Poor me, I'd only spent the last hour furballing and having too good a time to notice the "we weren't winning the war and I didn't give a damn and I must not actually be having fun as a result" scenario going on all around me.  :p

Heyas Muck!

Just get in touch with some vets like Zigrat or Hblair or any who organize missions on a fairly regular basis...they would appreciate the help I'm sure.

Myself and the 13th TAS don't do much base capture...we just try and help out where help is needed.

I'm sure you'll find a way to be involved on a more regular basis :)

LOL westy...

It's not me that claims that I'm in the majority...  It's the majority of players that claim i am.

leviathn.... I don't fly lags either but..  Ya know what is kinda the bad side of all these new spit flyers??  I am hanging it all out there... turnfighting em in the vertical even...taking chances and thinking, somewhere in the back of my mind,  if this guy is leviathn.... I just made a big mistake.

Muck, don't when your online, but if I am on, there is usally a mission in the planner, and in most cases, there are buffs in those missions.  Look at the roster next time you log on, if Ripsnort is in th roster, look at the mission planner.  I have no fewer than 50 pre-made missions that take 30 seconds to post, and I can even post it in your name, then you can do an EDIT/SAVE and then you will have the mission on your FE for future use.

Thks LePaul, actually I was inspired by Zigrat when he flew for "The good guys" at one time (Knits)  :)

Post by: muckmaw on November 16, 2001, 11:35:00 AM
Sounds good, Rip. Thanks.

There only problem is, if a mission is planned and announced by a guy like you, or BD5, you'll get alot more pilots on then if it was announced by an unknown like me.

AT any rate, I'll be paying close attention to the mission plans tonight, and every night. If nothings up, I'll just look for the guys who responded to this thread and offer my assistance.

Thanks for the tip!

I was serious!!

Cut me some slack, will ya! I only know the names I see on the radio most often. How am I supposed to know who has what for a reputation! I've only been on AH for 6 months.
*laughs*

Although, after this thread, I've developed a pretty good idea as to who's who.

Mister Muck. If you deside to fly and fight with the bishop side, I would be many happys to have you fight and fly under my command. I am expert coordinator of battles and flying and fighting things.

Well, build it right and they will come.

I found out that a well planned mission keeps them coming back.

~Make sure each flight has sufficient fuel to perform its task.

~Make sure each fligh has sufficient ordnance to perform its task.

~Identify what each flights' target is within the text string allowed for each flight description.

~Make sure you edit the start locations of each mission when you re-use a saved mission, and edit time so that mission expires within 5 min after launch (For spy purposes)

~Try to hold target information until you are airborn (again, spies flourish)

~Indentify potential targets as "reasonable success rate"..ie, don't throw 12-15 guys into a huge hording furball that is occuring just 5 miles from your airfield.

~Try to identify targets of opportunity that will relieve a neighboring field under attack.

~Use "Fighter Sweep Missions" whenever outnumbered, it helps relieve the battle front and they can be alot of fun.

~Allow a flexible choice of aircraft that everyone can enjoy or, do "National" sets of aircraft (Example: Japanese Jabo, with all Japanese aircraft, substituting the Betty with a B26 or something like that).

~Type in CAPS on text buffer when announcing the mission, but not so much that you aggravate the community.

~If no one joins the mission within the standard 10 min. time to launch window, simply announce the mission will be scrubbed, and try again in 30 min.  Don't be discouraged if you fail to attract alot the first few tries, more will join eventually.

~Don't launch a mission where you do not have enough pilots to do the job.  Just scrub the mission and try again later.

~Always make sure you goon flight is occupied, and always convey to the rest in the mission that 'the first man down, is the next man up with a back up goon'.

~Mix up mission goals, do a field capture, then a fun "Nap of Earth" mission to their city.

~Know when to call a NO-GO on a well defended field.

~Speed is life for successful field captures

~Speed is life for successful field captures

~Speed is life for successful field captures

Mission creators are not the reason a mission is successful or fun, its the pilots WITHIN that mission that make it successful or fun.     :)

Also, read this related thread on how to JOIN a mission:
