In game I either get Hard centering force with effects or I get
a soft to medium centering force with no effects at all.
What I want is a soft to medium centering force with effects.
Although my SWFF2 properties page is set to medium, the game always starts with the FF2 very stiff, but with effects. If I alt-tab
out to the panel to adjust it, on returning the stick is soft-medium
with no effects. Doesn't matter what the properties page says
before I launch the game, the stick always has hard centering force on startup.
I did have to download MS's swpatch to get the stick to work with my Via chipset - and am flumoxed at what to do to fix this.
BTW - the stick is just lovely when the centering is set to soft-medium. If this is all I get, I'll be quite happy - but I want my
rumbles too.

I am guessing that you are using XP. I had same problem on initial launch of AH. If I ALT/Tabbed out and came back it was OK. I finally gave up and pulled the plug on the forces.

correct, XP.
Anyone have a workaround?
I'm investigating the function of this stick with other games / XP to
see if it's a platform issue or an AH issue.

play AH with "hard-centering" (with no effects) and you will get used to it in just 1 month. I also recomend you to lift weights (20 or 50 lbs)

Just for grins, I downloaded Wb3 and the stick force is perfect. In fact, there's a slider in Wb3 labelled 'Trim Force' that when adjusted increases or decreases the centering force. In AH - this same slider has no effect.
I'm thinking this is a bug.
Also - in Wb3 I can Alt tab out and back in and there is no effect on the stick whatsoever. The rumbles, centering forces remain the same.
Anyone else seeing this??

I have the same problem with the MS SW FF2. I just disabled the trim forces (check box) and kept the rest. Now trim (centering) force is controlled by whatever you set in the Sidewinder control panel while effects still occur.
I don't think it's a bug- it's been this way for a long time. I think they are just trying to say that only he-men can fly airplanes. Personally I think it would lead to significant wrist repetitive stress injury at the high setting they use. Especially with the long hours some people put in on this game.

Sounds a bit like this problem on ms site
Sidewinder problem (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321127)
I tried to get return to centre to low but gave up & reinstalled win98 as there doesnt seem to be a fix for it. This articules been on there knowledge base for many months. I make a point of clicking on the comments at top left & asking when the fix is coming every week :(

Duh 715!
Why didn't I think of that?
Nope, no effect. I can select either of 4 settings before launching AH and the centering force remains the same with AH's trim force disabled.
In fact - the centering force in WinXP is pooched. MS has some
crappy XP drivers I'm thinking.
Damn, I spent near $90 for this thing. At least I'm able to use it, but I want to use ALL of it.

I have same problem and i use win98se

No problems here with Win ME.
I have heard of the XP problem many times though.
Good luck.

What motherboards are you running? Via chipsets I presume?
Anyone with Intel chipsets having issues with FF2 stick?
Anyone with an Nforce having issues with SW FF2?
That may be my final solution, the Nforce2.

I have an Intel 850MV motherboard. However, I failed to mention before that I'm running Windows 98SE. The fix I mentioned works fine for me. Perhaps it doesn't work for Win XP.

After installing xp on a a via motherboard sytem & the return to centre not working, trying every fix availble to mankind (ie VIA fixes).
I then installed xp on a ALi motherboard system & had exactly the same problem so I figured it was the crappy MS drivers under xp.
I have had no problems using ffb under windows98se.

Windows 2000 also has no issue with this.

Mine works fine on ASUS A7V8X mobo with VIA chipset. At first it was wierd then once i get the settings right in the Side winder software it was fine set the centering force to low and then reboot! i think thats how i fixed mine. That or i just got used to it!
