"Thunderbolt" by Robert S. Johnson. Pretty amazing tale by a dedicated jug pilot -- 27 confirmed kills in WW2. It has numerous descriptions of combat against 109s and 190s of all flavors. It even has a few brief descriptions of performance against Spit Vs and IXs.
You can get the book at amazon for $15.96.

I suggest to look for this book in small aviation/war dedicated online bookstore. There you can buy the same book for around $25, but it comes with a copy of Johnson's signature.

Hey AKcurly, even if Martin Bledsoe is way less known as a Jug's Ace, his book "Thunderbolt: Memoirs of a World War II Fighter Pilot" is, IMHO, much better. Check it and enjoy.

Yes, it has many interesting stories, some of which relate to the AH experience. For example, he relates that the JUG will outzoom anything, but not outclimb the spit IX. With the late (late 43) war prop, it would outclimb the spit IX though.
One of the stories was very illuminating: He was flying tail-end charley and as a result of a series of errors, he had a FW 190 open up on him with resulting serious damage. He dove away (shot to crap) and was flying home when one of the FWs found him again.
The FW pilot flew along beside him, gave a mock salute, repositioned himself and opened up at point blank range. Johnson was all scrunched up in front of the seat's armor plating. Evidently, the FW only had 30 cal left. The FW pilot kept moving back and forth trying to understand why the JUG continued to fly. The FW pilot repeated the manuever 3 or 4 times and was never able to bring the JUG down.
Not that it's important so far as AH's is concerned, but has anyone been able to bring a jug down with 308/30/12.6mm only? Just curious.

If it could outclimb spit 9 then it should outclimb most 109s with exception of G10 and above - with with it should be almost at partity.
I doubt whether laws of physics would agree with this particular anecdote.
Lot of people read compartisons from BAE testing of 190A3 vs spit9f and used them to "prove" that 190A3 would outclimb spit 9.
Most of them didn't bother to read that spit was new engine - not allowed to go to full throttle. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
And it was "even" with 190 without being flat out.
Once again, take all anecdotes with a BIG grain of salt.
Month ago i met Mr. Gabreski - P47 pilot extrordinare. First question - what was the best fighter - answer: "Spitfire 9 was the fighter's fighter"
Only shortcoming he could think of was range.
