Add new damage models to engines that could (depending on damage inflicted)
1. affect maximum power output
2. cause vibrations and shaking (damaged prop out of balance, bent rods, etc.)

This debate could get very long, as they have in the past, but I'm with you on this Midnight.

would like to also see random failures like the engine or oil line break or even speedometer not working altimier not work and suck. Also gear failure on landing like that 262 crash

I think a lot of people would be upset to spend 20 minutes flying around only to have to RTB because their engine began leaking oil caused by a random failure.
A damage model described by Midnight would be great, though.

random failures would truly blow.
this is not a real war. this is entertainment.
i don't mind wasting an hour due to my own stupidity, but wasting an hour of my life due to pretend random failures would annoy the hell outa me.

I want to fly a sim not an arcade i dont mean failures every flight more like 1 every 100 flights or something like that

I do think they could model planes loseing power as oil drains, etc.
Radiator hit should cause engine to overheat faster, shutting down wep etc.
A bit of rattle & shake would in that case be a warning that you have X time left till it siezes up entiirely.
On the other hand I trust HT to give us what he can when he can & leave the rest for another release.

I wouldn't want random damage. But combat induced damage would be great - a new damage model. Having your engine loose power after a few pings, having your instruments shot out, map "disabled" because it flew out of the shattered canopy... :)

Complex engine management would be nice. By manually setting your radiator, prop pitch/RPM, mixture and manifold pressure, you would get better performance than on "auto" setting. Choosing the preferred system should be chosen only from the hangar, not while inflight. Naturally, the planes which in reality had automated systems should have them in AH2 as well. If there was a manual override, that should be available as well. If you abuse your engine, it should overheat and eventually get damaged and loose power.
Yes, I'm looking forward to the upcoming IL2 Forgotten Battles as well.

How about a compromise? Make the random failures available offline and in H2H for training purposes. Since AH2 will have new/improved everything, it'd be pretty handy to learn how certain failures/damage affects performance. Plus you wouldn't piss off the masses by sticking it down their craw in the MA. In the TA, make it an option you can turn on/off. Plus you can add a handy feature from FS2k2; timed failures. Again it'd only be available offline, but you could intentionally fail xx number of systems after yy minutes. Set the timer to kill a mess of systems after 20 minutes, then head out after an enemy field/carrier offline. That'll really test your ability to handle things when it all goes down the crapper!

Definitely more *visibly* detailed engine model, but a big NO to random malfunctions. I'd just be very frustrated to succumb to a very artificial feature like that. How would you define the random factor? Where would you get the data from? Can you imagine the whines over it? It would be a cataclismically huge pandora's box, if you ask me.
But I'd like a more feature rich engine damage model that means you have to have a little more thought when using the throttle.

I would also like to see the automatic wep shut-off done away with. In combat, a pilot doesn't care if his engine has to be overhauled when (if) he makes it back to base if he needs the extra power to gain some degrees on the Me109 trying to kill him.
Fuel comsumption, not engine overheating, was the main reasoning for pilots to throttle back. I know of at least one case where a P51 pilot flew from mid-France to England at full throttle WEP on the deck with no problems.

I agree with Dowding and Camo, progressive eng damage as a result of battle damage coupled with a better visual expression of that damage would be good.
Random eng failures are not. Ht mentioned that with rank you could get better ground crews and as a result a "better" performing plane.
I dunno how I feel about this. New guys may avoid the arena if they percieve that the experts get the better performing planes.
Small performance increases of 5 - 10% maybe even then I am not sure.
Flying for 15 20 min just to have my eng fail would be a quick way to keep me out of the arena.

Another air warrior observation - whenever they turned on "'over-rev" (engine failure due to exceeding RPMS too long) you never heard so much howling. Even though there was a text warning and a light to warn you engine failure was imminent unless you trottled back.
They will have trouble with this.

Engine damage thru over heat I could live with............ other damage effects are really just game enhancements and would join the usual wish lists we normally spew out
Random engine damage I do not like........... I would prefer to see a random engine performance variation in the 95 to 100% performance zone............ this could be reduced as rank increased (flight sgt 95-100% random performance zone.......... wing Cmdr 99-100% random performance zone)...
Random total gun jams I do not like......... I would prefer to see a garanteed clip prior to a random gun jam zone.........so like above this would increase as rank increased (flight sgt is assured of 80% clip prior to any random jam................wing cmdr is assurred of 95% clip prior to any random jam)
Long sustained bursts of fire could cause jamming.......
Firing under high G could cause jamming.............
AC that were able to clear their jams should be modelled appropriately.

how bout after say like 3 pings on engine area a reduction of power. like 100% to 75% and so on
