Title: Amarillo, TX?
Post by: aknimitz on January 29, 2003, 08:59:13 PM
Ok, I know many of you will likely have smart-ass answers, so lets pretend you've already said them.

I am genuinely curious about what it is like to live in Amarillo, TX. Specifically, seasons? Terrain? Hunting (Quail, Deer, etc)? Fishing? Golf? Internet (other than dialup)?

Thanks! :)

Nim

I don't know what it's like to live there, but I've driven through there a few times. You're from Lawton...think flatter and browner and that's pretty much it.

move to austin. moose can show you where it is.

no tornados
no floods (unless yer an idiot and live in a  flood plane)
no snow or ice

hills and flat lands all within minutes of each other
green stuff (trees, grass, instead of dirt, and concrete)
not to big, not to small
lakes
parks
beer
wings
boobies
fdbs
fishing
hunting (nearby)

pretty much everything but a pro sports team, and a theme park.

ps. plenty of golf...actually more than plenty. and lots of places to fish and hunt that's even closer than amarillo would be (if you wanted to go to the coast).

Problem with AUstin is job market....its really tough to penetrate with UT there, and with UT being a top 10 law school.

We have connections to Amarillo, and an opportunity just popped up. THought I would poke around a little bit. Believe me, Austin would be our preferred city in TX - if only :)

Nice place.   I lived in Austin for a year several years ago and have lots of family near Lubuck.

While it doesn't have pro sports, everyone is pretty rabid about Texas Tech.  They're Big 12 so you'll get to see Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and Nebraska.  Plus Bobby Knight coaches the b-ball team  :)

And the hunting in West Texas is great.  Lots of deer and quail.  Most of it is on ranches, but I've heard it's pretty impressive.  When you get there, give a call to Atkinson Hunting (http://www.atkinsonhunting.com/).  They've got an amazing reputation for setting up hunts in that area.

Cox internet.

I suspect their usenet retention rate is pretty good, especially for the alt.multimedia.erotica.* stuff.

Heh.

Sounds a bit gay, though.

Estes lives there, I lived there for a few years, now I am just 35 miles from Amarillo.
Amarillo, to me, was a city with a small town atmosphere.  Folks were/are pretty friendly.
Not sure, but am almost certain you can get SBC DSL there, or, as Estes said, Cox definitely supplies cable internet service.
Not near as much to do as you would find in Austin or San Antonio or Houston, but hey, the population is way less than down there.  Like 140-150K population, not several million.
Hunting is great almost ANYWHERE in the Panhandle.  Amarillo is situated right smack dab in the middle of the Panhandle, so the choice would be yours as to what, where, and when you hunted.  Closest "decent" lake is Lake Meredith, then ya got Greenbelt Lake down east a ways at Clarendon.
Hope ya decide to settle in Amarillo or near here, Nimitz.  That way I can make Curly come MY way.  Twice now I've been in Wichita Falls or Iowa Park and not been able to hook up with him for steaks and beers, just bad timing I guess.
Lemme know what else you want to know. Email me at airboss32@yahoo.com  or at kuehnfam@cableone.net.  I'll get all the info I can and send it to you pronto.

Oh yeah, the seasons and weather and what not............one day you are freezing your nuts off, then you get up the next morning and it's 120 in the shade.....;)
Everyone says Chicago is the windy city........I say let them come and spend one spring in Amarillo, especially in March and April, they'll eat their words.  Freaking wind seems to be always blowing at least 25-30 out here on the plains.  Typical spring day:  High temp of 78 degrees, winds gusting to 65 mph, wind chill index freakin ZERO!  :p
Seriously, Nimitz, I lived down south a ways most of my life, but once I started to school back in 1990 in Amarillo, I pretty much decided I love it up here and don't wanna live anywhere else, ever.

I once ate the 72 oz steak in under an hour that is the famous promotion of The Big Texan steakhouse in Amarillo.

I was driving to LA with a friend and we stopped in to see the place after passing about 20 billboards starting two states away on the I-40.

It was a massive meal. Steak, baked potato, shrimp cocktail, salad and a roll. The guy beside me tried it and did not even get half way finished.  But if you finished you got the free meal and a certificate so I forced myself to eat it all. I made it with 5 minutes to spare.

As we drove away my stomach felt very unsettled so I got my friend to stop at the Dairy Queen on the West side of town. I needed something cold and soothing to eat fast or I was going to puke. I ate a large Blizzard and promptly fell asleep in the passenger seat for the next 4 hours.

When we got back to Toronto my friend told everyone how I ate the steak. His amazment was not that I finished the meal but that I was still hungry enough after to want a Blizzard for dessert.

I hung the certificate on the wall of my office for a while. I used to get a kick out of people's reaction to it.

That falling asleep thing was funny...

You know the steak is excellent. They trim all the fat off and it is cooked to perfection. Very tender although it is hard to cook a steak that size uniformly so some of it was a bit overcooked.

If you ever go to Amarillo you should try it. I did it as a joke but after I finished I felt kind of proud. I would laugh at someone telling me they were proud of eating a massive steak but after you do it you feel the same sort of pride as when you finish a marathon.

I train and compete in the Master's swimming program and my event is the 1.5 km freestyle. I do not get the same satisfaction moving up a position or two in the rankings as I did the day I ate that steak.

I thought eddiek hit the nail on the head with his description:
Amarillo is essentially "big for a small town".  You'll get some snow in the winter and some killer heat in the summer.  You're north of the "stink" that is central Texas but you're still near the bellybutton crack of tornado alley.

However, I'd have to agree with Lazs.  You just wouldn't fit there.

Iron, I KNOW you've driven the length of I-20.  Point your nose south when you're within 100 miles of Abeline and you'll know EXACTLY what I mean.

EDIT:  or was that you? :p

hehe, actually, the worst I've smelled was not terribly far from Amarillo. Lived on Cannon AFB near Clovis NM in late '70s. We were often blessed by essence of stockyard when the wind was out of the east.

Oh there's no question I could handle it. I spent 22 years of my life in Lawton, OK and loved it. Another 3 in Norman, OK and loved it. Its not as though I've lived my life in NYC and am considering moving to Amarillo :)

But then again, I'm not real sure. We've put a foot forward for the job opportunity, we'll see what develops.

Thanks for all the input guys! :)

That picture sure brings back memories.

I thought I could finish it too but it was a lot harder than it looked.  The funny thing is they make you eat up on a stage and they announce to the whole room when you are about to start.

When I finished they announced that I had done it successfully. When I got off the stage I was thinking I have to get outside and get some fresh air but people started coming up to talk and ask what it was like. The people were really nice and friendly so I did not want to be rude but finally after about 5 minutes I had cut out fast. The smell of the grill was making me sick.

They told me about twice a week someone does it successfully out of about 10 or so who try.
