Seeing a base being vulched I gallantly upped the most awesome german super weapon (109e) in defense. After the invading swine had been run off I noticed some gv's had decided to pick up where the aircraft had failed. Being without cannon did not deter me - I dive in on flak and tank many times. My thought was only to distract (and maybe practice some gunnery - though I was in fighter mode). Imagine my surprise when I disabled a Ostwinds gun and later got credit for the kill? It is true, the 109e MG is ubar :)

Its not to bad.Depends on what your up against tho.If Im gonna get stuck in a early war 109 I'll take the F4
-
I did not expect 2x 7.9mm MG 17 guns (I had no cannon left at that time) to take out a Ostwind turret, but I am glad of it. I upped it as a joke and was plesantly surprised to land perks in it.
edit:
I was coming in at high angles - I'll take this as proof that the ostwind isn't modeling any roof armor for the gun (which would be correct).

109's are about the easiest planes to fly well in the arena.

Glad you added the "about" :) It is certainly not as dificult to fly as, say a FM2 - which only a truely skilled and gifted pilot can get off runway.
(editted to make sense - secretary was talking to me while I typed original)

I have flown the -1a a lot more than i have the fm2. either way... after you fly either one you will feel like yu are flying an untouchable rocket if you fly them and then switch to a 109.

in the g10 maybe the g6 g2 f4 and e4 dont even hit 400mph.
Have you flown the ah e4? its decent enough but 90% percent of the planes are faster and almost everyone rolls better.
The 109s are no harder or easier to fly then anyother. Especially in the main.
The 109 is a true energy fighter using the verticle to get the advantage. Its not a b n z'r. Only the g10 care really "run away" its the 5th fastest plane on the deck with wep.
Bore & ZZZZZZ tactics with high speed passes dont work well in a 109. Controls stiffen above 400 and compression soon follows. It is better suited to the pure energy fighting where you set up a moderate altitude advantage right over or near the enemy. Then use short sprint dives with moderate closure rates for gun passes. The 109 can then use its climb to extend loop etc......
All the 109s have decent acceleration and climb especially when compared to their historic opponent. There are a ton of planes more suited for inexperienced pilots but once you understand the 109 its as easy as any other.

To be fair, he says "fly in", not "get kills in." The Emil's MGFF Cannon are hard to get hits with due to the low velocity and and paltry 60rpg. BnZ can be a trick because it has rather poor "high" speed handling. High speed in this case meaning anything over 350 or so.
In the CT it performs reasonably well against Spit I, Hurr I and P40's but I'd hate to face much else.

109e is a good flying plane - but back to the subject of thread - I was very surprised it could take out a flak w/o cannon. However, 109e is a rather hazardous MA ride any way you slice it. (But still a fun one)
The Bf 109E-4 has 370 kills and has been killed 756 times.
-
The Ostwind has an open topped turret. A 7.9 mm will kill a human rather easily. You can take out an ostwind with a pistol if you happen to be high enough to shoot down inside it :)

About 10 days ago, I was flying a 190A-5 in the MA (a rare appearance as I'm usually in the CT). I shot out all but a few cannon rounds in the process of killing half a dozen enemy fighters attacking one of our fields. I spotted a Panzer rolling onto the field and decided to make a few nearly vertical passes to distract the driver while a pair of our tanks raced to meet the intruder. I hit it with maybe ten 20mm, and several hundred 7.92mm rounds. Meanwhile, it began taking hits from our tanks.
Finally, the panzer blew up.
Danged if I didn't get the kill credit! Go figure. Damage modeling is a bit odd at times.
My regards,
Widewing

I had a 109E up against a Spit V the other day in the TA and couldn't believe how well it could hold it's own in the turn-department. After flying lots of overweight 109's, the E felt positively light!
Not saying it has any great attributes, but the fact that it doesn't get used much is more is just as much a matter that it has 4 older siblings to choose from. It's not a total lack of capability. Sure, it's kinda slow, but not more so than a Spit V, F4F, FM2, etc... the cannons are pretty tricky to fire, but when they hit they get the job done. The cowl guns, well, you can tickle people with them.

Know what would be fun? A Free For All ENY 40( or ENY 50 my first choice) or better Tour/Day/Arena/Event or something.
Hell if my ego could handle it (and I don't think it could :p ) maybe I'll try fly a tour that way in MA. Something like this might tie us over while we waiting for new planes since we don't use these "old" planes much anyway?

Fair enough. Honestly though, you recorded your last kill in a MA F4U1-A 4 months ago, once the FM2 was introduced you gave it up. Not a darn thing wrong with any of that, you are having fun in your own monotonous way - whatever floats yer boat - knock yourself out! :)
However as far as I can tell ou have not recorded a single kill in a 109, of any version, (much less 109e) in any MA tour ever.
It was good bait to toss out though, you got me FISH ON! (http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/splat.gif)

(It's really just an F4U-1 because it has the bird cage canopy. The F4U-1A introduced the regular canopy we are all familiar with.)
-
The first time I flew a 109E in AH, I thought my joystick had lost calibration.
It rolled so BAD and SLOW that I thought something was busted.
Thanks for reminding me guys, I want to track down the historical roll rate on the real 109E.
Anyone have the figures? Was she REALLY that slow in roll rate?

maxtor.. hmm I know I flew a g2 for some sorties back there a while... know I got kills.

BATZ do you have more stats?
-
No and good luck finding anymore.......
I have looked and looked and thats the best I have come up with.
Like you I could hardly believe the roll rate, especially since the only other guage I had was comparisons against other 109es in other games.
However, the 109e is capable and with its good rudder authority its does "ok".
Urchin looked into this as well, his conclusion was the 109e roll rate was fine but that the spit roll rate was a bit high.
But theres no denying the "feel" one gets when rolling the 109e.

Does anyone know where I can find Eric Browns flight test of the 109E ? He tested a captured version.
I think someone in the USA is flying the worlds only airworthy emil. Anyone know their website?
