Title: LAZ! I met the "True Brit" :)
Post by: Toad on January 30, 2003, 09:20:46 AM
Remember that John Wayne movie "True Grit"?

Well, just got back from England and met what I consider to be some "True Brits". Huge amounts of common sense, a love of the land, tough as bull leather, extremely proficient with firearms and great fans/trainers of good gundogs.

Although I've been to England many, many times, this is really the first time I was out with their outdoorsmen. Indeed, I stayed with a family at this estate for nearly a week and was included in the daily activities.

I came away with the feeling that this group at least had far more in common with the Americans I associate with than I ever would have expected. There just wasn't much difference, really.

A thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

A scene I've witnessed and been part of in Kansas many times with only a few minor differences.

Another similarity... except that overall the level of dog training is higher than ours.

the ONLY red-legged partridge taken on this day... by the guest!

It was considered a "cracking good shot", by the way.  ;)

WTG Toad!

I've always liked the Brits....they have balls and are not timid when it comes to what is important to them....just like in the US, some of the young ones have thier heads where the sun doesn't shine, but as a nation, I'm proud to have them as our ally.

All them rubber boots so that the sheep don't run away? :p

Nice pics Toad.  Beet1e must be having a meltdown seeing firearms like that! :D

Whats with all those mounds of dirt, moles?  I hate moles! :)

Incidently, those photos with the background could have easily been photographed in Western Washington or Oregon, similiar scenary

Yeah, in Britain we have plenty of silly old fools, who are convinced of their own wisdom enough to give off a deeply repugnant air of superiority. Just like the Yanks it would seem. We seem to have a lot in common.

Dowding, it was not real far from Plymouth.

I didn't meet any old fools there. I met what I consider to be truly quality people, people I'd be proud to call "friend".

My last comment had nothing to do with this thread, Toad. Just a particular post that happened to be in it.

Some good country down there - spent alot of my childhood in Devon and Cornwall and I've been to Plymouth many times.

Still, you should go further north and check out Yorkshire. Common sense is something we have in spades, apparently. Alot tougher than those Southerners too.

If you stayed in say, York, you could go around the walled city there and check out the Viking museum. You'd also be a fairly short drive away from Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood country. Closer to York still would be the Yorkshire Dales - if you're an outdoorsman I'm sure it would be interesting. Was dragged all over that place as a kid. ;)

toad you said near plymouth, newnham park? my mum shoots there and my step dad is a member of quite a few shoots in the area.

Glad you liked devon its a beautiful place, nice beaches, dartmoor, and country folk who enjoy the outdoors.

BTW those are not mole hills they are the impact craters from the pheasant and partridge mounted A2G missles that we are forced to equip said birds with to give them a fighting chance. :D

Toad did you go to any museums?  There really isn't much near plymouth.

Lol dowding "Yorkshire born, yorkshire bred, strong in the arm, thick in the head"  that's the saying isn't it?  tougher than us southerners? nah, just a fairy tale you northerners made up to cover up your insecurities.:)

Mr. Toad - glad you had a good time. :) But you didn't call me! Oh well, come back soon. I expect you were pressed for time if you had to go all the way down to Devon. Hope you were suitably impressed with our citizens' armoury.

Hehe Ripsnort - we won't hijack Mr. Toad's thread. Let's just say that over here, we do things properly. :D

Ha. The slightest bit of harsh weather and Londoners and Southerners generally go nuts. To listen to them you'd think a small volcano had errupted in Hackney, instead of a little snow fall. :D

Now if you go North, to Durham or Newcastle - the women wear bikinis and the men wear short sleeved shirts even if its snowing and -5 below. They don't believe in coats. They are winter-wear atheists. When I was a student, I used to row for my college in Durham. I had one Manc, two southerners and a Swiss guy in my crew. Guess who whined most about those 6am February starts down on the river, when there was ice on the landing stage? ;) I even had the Swiss guy calling them a pair of SSBs (Soft Southern Bastards). All in good fun though - we were good mates.

As for being thick of head - didn't Newton spend most of his life in Yorkshire? Might be wrong on that one though. :)

There was a billboard ad once in the middle of Gloucester, it said:  The closest thing you can get to Streetfighter 2 on the PS would be to stand here and shout "southern pansies" in a thick Geordie accent.

The American Green Legged Partridge is much larger and has a better beak than the English Red Legged Partridge. BTW Toad, were you aware that was an endangered species you killed? For all we know it may be the final one.... I hope it made a hearty meal for you and your 12 mates. :)

I doubt it's too awfully endangered overall.

They raise them right there from eggs. They did a few thousand this year I think they said.
