Consoles are good for arcade games.
Bad for sims.
Do you have any idea how frustrating it would be to try and hit someone while using a TV as a monitor? TV's resolution is horrible(something like 700x400), and on top of that is interlaced. (unless you have an HDTV, in which case I doubt a comp price would be that big of a deal)
You can build a very decent system for under $1000(far better than any you can buy pre-built for that price), less depending on the parts you already own.

A good idea may be to buy a piece of junk p3600 or something like that really cheap at a 'warehouse' type place. Should be able to get one for near 200 dollars now. Then, just add an okay vid card (tnt2 ultra with 32mbs) for 30 bucks. You are set to go.
Then when you can afford it you can upgrade to the good stuff, without buying a case, power supply, harddrive, floppy, cdrom, keyboard, mouse and all that other crap that has stayed the same for 10 years.
Just dont buy a proprietary system, ie something with a name on it.
Get a microtek or some piece of crap like that.

Simple solution:
1. Get XBox
2. Install ModChip
3. Install Linux
4. Run AH under WINE

good luck with controllers and hi-res graphics on a TV.. lol

comon now, i had this great ww2 sim for my commodore 64. What was that called? yamamoto or something? What a flight model.

You're being generous (for the US at least). The *visible* portion of an NTSC broadcast is only about 480x440.
Further, the internal resolution of the xBox video is only 640x480.
