I'm doing programming (mostly multiplayer stuff), map making, a bit of modeling/animating and other art stuff for a "mini"massive multiplayer online rpg game! its in its VERY early stages right now.
Check it out at http://www.gpinteractive.com/shadowsgate/news.shtml
Its kinda medieval times, but not based on history.
It is more realistic though, no magic and stuff, and most arms & armour are/are based on historic arms and armour.
No demo yet sorry, just started actuelly making it a week or 2 ago!
tell me what ya think! :)
-
I just need somewhere to post this :)
-
No one likes our game (or MMORPG's)??
-
I like the basis of the game, just not enough information on the mechanics/graphics to form an opinion yet for me. I bookmarked the page and will be checking in periodically.

Yeah, Well site just made today, and game in VERY early stages :)
We will prolly post some screenshots around 8th, but don't be expecting too much as cool graphics are the LAST thing we do, all engines and stuff come first :) .
prolly won't use any of the models, textures, etc. in the final game that you see in earlier-mid screenshots.
-
too early to have an opinion yet. but I'll keep an eye on your sight.
is this going to be something like everquest without magic? (no single player mode, just multi)
-
I'm not really sure, never played ever quest.
Gameplay ideas are bound to change from now untill its realesed, but we will be focusing on gameplay first , and graphics 2nd.
First game/version/whatever we realese will prolly be full multiplayer, second we will prolly have singleplayer mode.
-
Yeah, keep an eye out on the game. The site itself is a little empty, mostly cause I just programmed up last night and it was only for about 2 hours.
Basically, we will have two versions of the game itself. Single Player and Multiplayer(obviously). Multiplayer doesnt follow the exact story line that Single Player does, but it will have the same logic...along with the same characters. We are making the MP quests a little coincided with the story, so when we release the Single Player version, you won't be just left high and dry.
In both Single Player and Multiplayer you can pick from 3 characters; Knight, Archer, and Alchemist.
With the Alchemists you can find certain elements in the game, mix them together and come up with your own substances...you may come up with something that can explode, starts a fire, freezes on contact, make something or somebody tired(or go to sleep)...healing medicines...anything you can think of...there is basically endless possibilities on what you can mix together.
What makes it fun, is that most of the things you can make, we won't even tell you about in the manual...youll just have to figure them out on your own.
We have an interesting Battle Engine, that we are working on, that most MMORPG's haven't thought of.
If you want more information on the game, then please ask.
Sincerely,

Bookmarked the site, good luck :)

I'm toying with some concepts and ideas around this stuff, because I'm sick of database application programming or jsp web developement.
Check out http://www.cyberspaceengineers.org for some reading about cutting edge MMOG architectures. Discussions of going past the pure client-server architecture into some sort of distributed P2P organization are very interesting.
What 3D engine do you plan to use? in house developement or third party?
I was looking at:
Crystal Space: http://crystal.sourceforge.net/
Ogre : http://ogre.sourceforge.net/
Genesis 3D: http://www.genesis3d.com
Torque Engine: http://www.garagegames.com/pg/product/view.php?id=1
Torque engine looks very feature rich for a measly 100$, the others are free, but seem a quite bit more crude.
If I can get my lazy self to produce some little tech demo, it would be a MP 3D version of Kavir's MUD combat system: http://520006811875-0001.bei.t-online.de/glad.html
It is similar to what you have in mind?
-
Saintaw - Thanks, appreciate it.
Takeda - Yeah...ive messed around with Gen3D awhile back in my earlier game development years ;). Torque is an alright 3d engine...but it's by far not the best...same with Crystal Space.
Out of all the ones you gave me, Gen3d and Ogre are the best...Although we still aren't using either for this game.
We are right now using DBPro(DarkBASICPro), for our 3d engine. We holding a private test of the game this saturday on our duel Xeon 2.2 pent 4 server.
So, youll see the screenshots on the site after we take them during the test.
Thanks for your suggestions though takeda.

cajun-I have been playing Runescape for over a year. Let me beta-test it when you have it ready, ok? :)
-
lol udet, cool! whats ur name on there? I spend lotsa time (too much) playing RS when i should be workin on game :D
public beta is still a while aways, right now we're still workin on engines and making world and all, don't even have the models we r going to use done yet! :) but we could prolly put together just a little walk around demo in a few weeks.. I really dunno what the plans are as far as demos/betas are concerned.
I'm impatiantly waiting on patch with new 3d pipeline for the language we are using, its suppose to be out in "2 weeks" (seriously! LOL) course it was suppose to be out by christmas :D lol
-
Become a regular at checking the site udet...you'll get all the information you'll need there. I'll be working on more content to put onto the site and ill be adding some concept art of the game to tickle your gaming senses a bit ;)
-
Just thought I'd say (and bump this thread up :) )
New concept Art & Versions (tells about the games) page!
And there should be music but for some reason it doesnt work.. anyway.
Allso we will have pics of the beta test this saturday, so "stay tuned" :D
-
Yeah, more concept art coming today. I'm gonna work on either programming up a forum board or just put up one, so if you all would like to talk, ask questions, give suggestions...etc...you will be able to.
-
This looks cool..
the Troll art is awsome.
-
Thank you :) We appreciate the interest.

Having been a closed beta phase 1 EQ tester many years ago I'm always interested in the latest MMORPG. I've tested a lot of games; UO, EQ all phases of beta, The Claw, Zeus, AOE, and many others. I'm currently under NDA for 2 large titles however they're not keeping my interest.
When your ready for some testers let me know!
Looks interesting so far. I'm interested in what you mean by "miniMMORPG".
Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
-
Well by "miniMMORPG" we mean we're not quit sure how many players we can get in each room, we are hoping at least 200-250 but may have to be something like 125-175 due to lag & other issues.
-
yeah...i didnt understand that either...but thats alright...you all knew what he meant.. :)...ill explain a little better what he was trying to say...basically Shadows Gate is a series that I started up to work on about 2 years ago..getting everything sorted out in my head on what I want here..and there....just recently we have started to put those ideas to play...we are gonna have 2 to start...make SG:MP for our one and only multiplayer version(although it will be updated)...and then release SG1 later on in stores as a SP only game, as of right now...we have a big community on people that has been waiting for its release for quite some time now. So he meant that its mini for the MP version of it..cause we dont know how many people will actually play that version yet.
Mox...we will keep you in mind for testing things out. Thanks for your interest in the game, and offering your help with beta testing.
-
Cajun, I like your idea. Very interesting. One thing thoughh, the names Perthshire and Zoroasa sound really familiar, for some reason. I can't remember where I may have seen them before, if I have, but you may want to double check to be sure you aren't infringing on someone else's ideas there.
Just sayin...
I'll keep an eye on your progress, though. Good luck.
-
Actually im the owner of the game...so he didnt make up that stuff..I hired him as a programmer for the game and to join the team....and I came up with all of those names you see on the map...Perthshire for one...thats a real place...alot of my ancestors came from there(Perthshire, Scotland).
So if you dont understand anything in the game, ask me. lol
-
hehe, yeah i just a programmer/modeler :D
-
Well, we held a test today, or well tecnically it was yesterday even though it was only bout 20 mins ago :D
Anyway, it went pretty good, tommorrow (we are hoping) to do first test on a server, and add a bit of eye candy.
We will, if every thing works out right, have very early ingame pics! so don't expect too much graphics wize just yet :)
-
the big testing day has been re-scheduled for possibly tomorrow. Hopefully then we will be able to show you a few screenies of the game eh?
-
Where's the link to your message board at so we can find out whats going with your game?
-
Message Board's not done yet, Element needs to write one up or something :)
Hoping to have it up pretty soon, I can't wait to hear what people have to say about it :D
-
yeah ill work on that a little bit today...if it takes too long for me to program up another message board...then ill just use a different one.
Yeah I can't wait to hear what they are saying either..lol.
-
Just bumping thread up, no new news really.. took a few screenshots of the game, we might get em up soon I havent talked with element bout it yet.
-
Forums are up-ish (not officially yet) and new contest actuelly contest started days ago, just thought i'd let ya know!
-
Yes,
It would be outstanding if you all could tell others about Shadows Gate and about the news that may interest you or others that you know. It would be greatly appreciated.
-
Umm...I'm interested in the game. Can I participate in any beta testing?
-
I guess ya could, element?
Hmm lotta ppl interested in beta testing, hey thats great cuz we will need to do a bit of testing with lotsa people to see how many ppl can be in game before it gets laggy!
I think sometime in future we should schedual a huge beta test see if we can get about 50 people + in the game!
-
Ya i want to beta test tooo, hook a brotha up!

-
looks like its gonna be good
-
Yeah we've gotten so many people asking to beta test it. We will keep you all in mind for the beta testing if we need some cause we do need alot of testers :)
-
Allright, great!
We're still good ways off to being ready for the first beta, but maybe once we get an early combat engine in we could have a "public" beta test and let everyone slash each other :) though even thats a good way off.
Right now actuelly programming the game itself is kinda on hold untill we can make a few tools and models.
-
The forums are finally up!!!
