Title: Liberal? Conservative? Both?
Post by: midnight Target on February 05, 2003, 10:43:54 AM
I have seen people get pigeonholed for their views on this BBS and I'm OK with that, however, I don't believe any of us are completely Right or Left on all issues.

I have racked my brain for an issue where I would fall into the conservative camp. I found one.

I think Bi-lingual education, and all the repercussions of this issue are a huge mistake. We need to maintain a common frame of reference as a society, and language is the most important factor in that regard.

I don't think we should forsake kids who don't speak English. We should provide programs that will help them learn English. We should not perpetuate a bilingual society though.

Then quick voting party lines.  Vote the issues.

I have never voted party lines.

Didn't vote for Carter for instance, either time.

What about some sort of a system where you get what you vote for, in a way.  You choose at the beginning of the year what programs you choose to support with your tax money.  If you choose none, then you pay none, or less in any case.  But if you feel you ought to support the government program, it is deducted from your check just like the rest of your taxes through the year.  At the end of the year, you choose more.

Wonder how people would vote (or choose programs) then?

easy, intentional violent crime im probly more conservative than most.

follow the constitutions model of trial where the jury runs the thing not the judge. jury should not be read the law as more than suggestions. the way it works now is just insane and our society reflects it.

hehe, I did, the first time.

I've always felt Jimmy Carter was a man of integrity. I didn't always agree with him but I'd consider voting for him again.

Yea he is. But I was so far left in '76 that I voted for Moonbeam Brown in the Primary and decided to go with Ford out of spite in the General. In '80 I was an Anderson fan.

That is called private enterprise and free market. Welcome to the Libertarians, Greese! :)

Kinda slipping more and more into that party for sure, but not ready to change my affiliation from Republican yet.  There's a lot libertarians support that I am very much against.

Anyway, I can't remember the last time I voted along party lines...  I always look at the candidate or the issue first, then party affiliation.  For instance, I tend to support the environment a lot, but I am a republican.  (I'm no spotted owl lover, but I don't like the patchwork quilt irresponsible logging has done to Oregon forests either).

Yes, but I think of that as more a radical idea than a liberal one.

(Pinned to the wall? - huh?)
