Wife wants want for her Birthday in April. I know nothing about them! I sent her the jpg of the Redneck palm pilot and she muttered something about "if you want to do yourself manually the rest of your life....." :yikes:
Anyway, I need to know, is there a particular brand that is superior? Which do you like? Cost?
(No, I don't need the type with a cell phone/web access on it)

depends what she needs it for
just phone humbers and appoints a Palm 500 color is fine around $300
if she wants to carry around docs and spreadsheets she needs a hand pc which runs a variant of windows around $600

Generally speaking the Palm Pilots are the best supported of the PDA's (more software, utilites, and hardware options). My wife has one one since the Palm Pilot I came out.
She currently has a Palm Pilot M505. She uses the begeebies out of that thing.
As far as data exchange goes. She migrates data to/from MS Word and Excel with no problems. I have no idea what software she has loaded on it. She is a wiz with that thing.

Palms are great, a larger portion of CE devices I've seen get left on the desk.
Go one step further, grab a Treo 270. I have a 180 and love it.

Palm all the way IMO.
but like stated, it depends on what it'd be used for.
I bought our dept heads the 100 buck variety because all they wanted was the basics (apts, contacts, etc) and for 30 bucks they added the ability to view spreadsheets and docs.

Don't get a PDA unless it comes with a GPS option, those things are cool. A little GPS receiver snaps onto the PDA and you can use it as a moving map. Great for recreational flying and serious outdoors activities. I know Palm PDAs come with that option, and so do some other brands.

ohh and check out the Sony Clie's, they're by far the best implementation of Palm O/S devices at the moment.

be sure and make brownie points ...
have it pre-loaded with this (http://www.rmrsoft.com/palm/diet.htm)

I use a Samsung i330. It's a color PalmOS PDA with a cellphone built in. That means you get 150 kbps internet just about anywhere, for http, POP, SMTP, etc. And you can dial or email people directly from you address book. Amazon has a great deal on them right now.

Check out the Sony Clié N760C...it's about a year and a half old, so the price has come down quite a bit, but it's still a viable option.
Palm OS 4.1, Color Screen (nicer than the M505), Memory stick support, USB Cradle, IR, Plays MP3s and other MM, and comes with headphones if she's into listening to music on it, and it's fully compatible with other Palm OS devices.

-edit- Instead of Eagler's suggestion, you might wanna pre-load it with this (http://tinylink.com/?EIQNPq5XqR ) instead. :)

I highly recommend you go with a low-end model first to determine whether or not your wife will actually like using them. They are an acquired taste, and well, sometimes people just dont like them. I would recommend the Palm m500 (non-color). It can be purchased for probably around $150, and it is an excellent starter for you to test the waters.
Good luck!

I'm got the Sony Clie T-650C, and it is great. Memory stick for MP3s, headphone jack, color screen (hi rez), jog dial, and more. $300.
I've owned 5 Palm Pilots, and this is the best.
