Title: And yet another reason to love the French
Post by: Habu on February 07, 2003, 02:32:41 PM
In yet another example of France chooseing to support a despotic dictator over supporting a western lead campaign to oust him, Robert Mubabe is invited to Paris this month.

Ok are all of you familiar with the attocities commited over the past couple of years by the Zimbabwe government of Robert Mugabe against the white farmers (decendants of the original British settlers that have been in that country for over 150 years)?

In a nutshell Zimbabwe has unemployment near 60% and 4 out of 5 people live in poverty. Though the country was once the bread basket for sub-Saharan Africa, it is now just a basket case due to Mugabe's policy of turning productive white owned farms over to hooligans and cronies with the result that about half the population is at risk of starvation. He has brought trumped up charges of treason against the country's leading opposition party's leader. He ran a rigged election full of intimidation and deadly violence targeting supporters of the opposition party.

When Mugabe first started this campaign western leaders raised a bit of protest and a prohibition banning Mr Mugabe from entering EU member countries was passed.

If there is one thing African dictators crave beside power and money it is a world stage. This ban probably hurt him more than any other event.

In late December France invited the dictator to a Paris summit  effectively circumventing the ban.

Instead of standing firm with other western nations to exert pressure to force Mr Mugabe from power, France has decided to let him hold court in Paris this month.
