I couldn't agree more.  The total lack of lethality really diminishes your ability to learn anything about what you're doing.

I pored a whole clip of 20mm cannon from a NIK into a lancaster and the thing didn't even smoke.

If you want more realistic settings for lethality you can always try the Dueling Arena.  It also has more selection of fields at different altitudes and a complete set of planes to fly.

The only thing that the TA lacks because of reduced lethality is the actual kill... If you want something more realistic then the DA is better since you will need to deal with normal ammo loads and regular fuel use (which the TA has at modified levels).

Just a suggestion...

I think you are asking "have I landed enough hits" or "taken enough damage to die".  In that case, I don't think there is a feature as you describe.

Receiving any number of hits is really unacceptable because a single ping can pilot kill you.  I use that as a guide because only after you have lost position can someone actually shoot at you (except in a HO).  if they land hits, then you lost, or vice-versa.  Relying on your aircraft to suck up some hits is not wise or something to count on.  Anything over a couple of pings and you would be a goner in the MA though in most matchups, or would have lost something important and the fight would be effectively over.

TA lethality settings will not change in the near future.

We tried it the other way, and drove entirly too many fine new pilots away because they were constantly vulched before they could learn to fly.

Soda is correct, you want MA settings go to the Dueling arena.

There are changes afoot but I am not at liberty to release any info about them.

Obviously I am not able to clearly relate my idea and will refrain from anymore attempts.

I know what you are getting at Jimbear, you want something that would indicate a kill yet not actually kill the plane.  Kinda like a tag, you're dead, thing where you fly on based on the current damage model.  The function for that isn't there.

My point was, if someone lands hits on you at all you should consider the fact that you lost.  A single .303 hit might be enough to pilot kill you so flying where you accept some hits is not a good practice.  The ping sounds and hit sprites show hits to both players so try and use that.  I know that you may not die to the first hit in the MA, but you also may, so by accepting even a single hit you are effectively rolling-the-dice of luck.

I spent about 5 minutes in the TA before heading to the MA.  I think I made it off the ground once.  Every other time I was vulched.  One of the guys in there at the time just got frustrated and quit.  He said he'd been in the game almost all day, but got shot before he left the ground.

Is there a training place people can go to learn to fly, and NOT get shot on the ground?

You can try setting up your own H2H arena where ure the boss and you can kick the people you dont like.  Im pretty sure this will work :D :)

Lethality in the TA is so low it is almost impossible to really vulch someone.  It is annoying though and not acceptable behavior.  Remember that everyone arrives at A1, so moving to another field typically ensures that nobody will bother you.  When helping people out I always leave A1 with them and fly somewhere else.

I've been away for a bit (from AH) so I'm certainly not up to speed, but I think your dealing with the problem the wrong way. Hopefully someway exists to restrict access to those truely "bad eggs". Once you get beyond very basic ideas and concepts...damage is a significant part of the equation. Learning how to survive a well set up pass or being able to "dangle your tail" and avoid lethal damage while coaxing an overshoot really cant be learned without realistic damage. Obviously things got truely out of hand for you to need to go to this extreme....just think you can solve it a better way.

If you see a Trainer or Staff member online and you are being vulched in the Training Arena (TA).  Please notify one of us immediately, we will handle it for you.  If we aren't online and you can't get the person to stop,  please send us an email with the individual's "handle" and we will look into it.  Filming the incident will help support your accusatiuons, so feel free to us [ALT R] (both keys simultaneously to toggle film on and off).

The TA is for new members to get their feet wet in Aces High, not for them to be target drones...

dangle your tail

A single 20mm hit to the tail tends to knock it clean off... I wouldn't be planning on that as an acceptable tactic.  Too many planes will make you pay at least 50% of the time for something like that.  You should be able to coax an overshoot without giving any real shot opportunity to the enemy.. if not you are just asking for trouble.

exactly my point...it's a fine line. Your not going to generate an overshoot unless you give the bandit what he/she percieves as a good shot. Obviously you need to fit the tactics to the plane and your perception of the pilot...a 109 is much less of a threat than a spit in your scenerio. The 109 will have a tougher time scoring with its 20mm (or 30mm) than the spitty will. I'd let the 109 in much closer than a spitty. Obviously you screwed the pooch if your dealing with this problem anyway (in a 1 vs 1). More often than not your going to pay a price to even things out. Setting up a snap shot vs a tracking shot is a big first step...then minimizing the quality of the snapshot...then denying the shot all togeather.

I jes yell out, "You're dead!" Or, "Bah, ya got me!" :D:D

I've driven enough peeps into the ground so I cant complain. ;) TA is great tho for landing, bombing runs and just a general chase and run scenario. Doesnt sound like much but it's an immense help.

I was around for the vulch days and I can say, it wasnt pretty. Lotsa squabbling and bs goin on. Now ya cant get too many kills but it is better that way. Kills in TA dont mean jack anyway.

zrooster,

I haven't been around in a while...especially in TA, but I'm pretty familiar with the problems...I was one of the original group of trainers and we did have problems...however we also had Cit (last flew as fester), RAM, Nath, Nash, DMF (leviathen) and a host of others furballing in the TA. Far as I'm concerned it was a great enviornment to learn in. I don't want to minimize the magnitude of the problem back then...was a MAJOR issue on BBS...but even so you could really learn alot.

My last time in the TA was 5-6 months ago and you had a bunch of dweebs gangbanging each other with no vets or trainers around...this was the same over 6-7 visits. I certainly understand the need to alter that situation...just making the observation that training without "live fire" is no training at all.

I appreciate what people are saying, but if you want something more realistic and don't want to be scored, head to the dueling arena.  Ask someone in the TA to join you, or find someone from one of the other arenas.  The DA is much more realistic since it offers normal ammo loads and fuel burn rates, plus you get to shoot at red icons, not green.  You also get normal damage so you can practice taking hits (yikes....) if you'd really like.

The current settings in the TA are meant to discourage those few people who insist on picking on people in the TA.  If you want to learn in a big furball, head over to the MA since the situations there are much more complex than they could be in the TA.  You can't hide in the TA forever since you really only get better by facing better pilots, not picking on new players.

zroostr, no need to call out "bang your dead"... the sound of pings does that for you.  I've used that technique in fights in the TA consistently with people and it works just fine.  It's a very good technique and allows you to break apart and remerge again.  It's not as silly as it sounds.

lol:D

I do think TA has it's worth. It's just not a place to get kills and when I first returned to AH I didnt like it but now I see the reasoning and have no qualms. Besides like I say, bein a king sh*t in TA does not correlate to bein the same in MA. I learned that real quick. So yes, DA is better for those that want to see the consequences of bad flying in enemy territory. Or if ya just wanna see how many pings it takes to go down. ;)
