Wow...
Thats totally not funny at all.
People died.
-
You know the pilot's last words, don't you Shade?
"I said a Bud Light!!!"
-
You know what I heard...
The plane that took off before the Concorde was missing a piece of metal trim from inside one of the jet housings. A piece of metal trim almost exactly matching the missing piece was found in the crash wreckage.
They determined that the metal piece had punctured the tires, the tires spewed up and punctured the fuel tank.
France says that a runway sweep was missed due to a fire drill.
Makes ya feel real safe huh?
-
I think the metal peice was found on the runway. But anyway go to AVWEBS site and read what they actauly talk about on it. The tires could have just ruptured.

You have to wonder about a plane that blows up when a tire blows. For the military this may be acceptable, just not with 100 passengers on board (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

The concordes takeoff speed is around 250 mph. Imagine the RPMs those tires turn. When one lets go, you bet its gonna carry some kinetic energy.
-
I agree hblair... you'd think that would have been a consideration when the plane was made. Tires blow out... for many different reasons. Its better to plan for it than to hope it just never happens.

Not going to get into the details but it may be best not to jump to conclusions about that accident. A close relative is a captain on Concorde and there is considerable "discussion" on what happened and the political manouvreing going on. It's interesting to me to be able to see the real story and the press story.
-
Regardless of the accident they are magnificent planes and it's a shame that the current fleet of a dozen or so is all there is.
There's no replacement. So when they die - they die forever...

Not true Lynx. There is a "Super Concorde" being being developed and built. It won't be ready by the end of these Concorde's service lifetimes, but not too terribly long afterwards.
There was some sort of fiberglass deflector added to the British Concordes but not to the French. Whether or not it would have prevented the crash, I sure don't know. What is known is that there have been a number of tire failures that led to pieces of tire and/or pieces of wheel penetrating the wing and fuel tank. This one just caught fire.
-
Yep there are several previous instances of tire failures on the Concorde resulting in damage to fuel, engine, hydraulic, and landing gear systems.
-
Actually damage to the aircraft from tire debris isn't limited to the Concorde,TWA,Delta,LuftHansa, etc all of them have maintenance log entries about repairs being done because of FOD damage from tires.
The Concorde caught a "golden BB" trying to read more into that sounds like media sensationalism, remember all the crap over flight 800? hell, they had everything from the navy blowing it away to collision with a UFO (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
FOD is FOD, and it's very bad for aircraft, which is why we in the industry worry about it so much.

This hysteria about Concorde is nuts! how many times have you read about 747's crashing or bits dropping off and yet everyone seems more than happy to fly off on holiday without a second thought.
-
Don't forget the gremlins which latch onto the 747's wings during a storm and tear up the outer engine with their razor-shrp claws.
It has to be true. I watched it on TV!!!

(http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) That Gremlin is clearly over-modeled! It should be the unarmed Urban Recon Version.
