UK citizen's support of war on Iraq without UN sanction is running at mightly impressive 9%. Yes, that's 9%.

Coaches to London are £5 from Sheff on saturday.
Couldn't face the coach (too much like torture for taller people). Going on the train and getting there 10am (£40 ticket!)
Look out for me on the telly! (I'll be the one wearing the AH cap(not)).
(aside, has anyone actually bought any of this cheesy AH merchandise? HTC I can design some better T-shirts for you?)
-
I ain't catching the coach and I certainly am not paying £40 to go on the train to London. I could fly to Barcelona for that! ;)
BTW, one of my mates went to Malaga for the day last week. He just drove down to Luton, got a cheap EasyJet flight, and was on the beach for 11.30! Stayed there all day, soaked up the sun, and was back in Sheffield for midnight. Total cost = £80.
Perhaps when they start flying from Leeds Bradford, we are going to fly over to Barcelona on a Saturday afternoon and spend Saturday night over there, and fly back Sunday morning. Probably be the equivalent of an expensive Saturday night out in Sheffield, but with far better looking women, better weather and better night-life.
But it's crazy that you can fly to a Spanish beach for not much more than a trip to Blackpool. :D

How in the world do you become a HUMAN SHIELD? I mean financialy, quit your job? Who the heck is paying for this stupid idea.
Its sorta reminds me of the globalization protestors. HTF do they manage to globe trot around the world to all theses meetings ?

2)You have this constant urge to hug a tree
3)you are or understand women

5)You have to think it's better to leave your family to go cross country to stand up for toejam you have no chance in hell of changing but are so delusional you think that the US/UK gives a rat's bellybutton what your wimpy limp wristed tofu eating waste of human flesh thinks.

You've got to hand it to Blair - he isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in.
-
No, but at this rate he will be a very ex-Prime Minister in short order. Labour is completely split on this issue and relfects public opinion to a large extent - he ought to watch his back, because someone might decide leadership of the party would be a tasty prospect.
As an illustration of how bad things are for Blair and Co., Labour is only one percent ahead of the Conservatives in some polls. That's the conservatives who have no policies, no leader and no real support. Previously, Labour enjoyed a huge lead on the Tories.

The impression I get is Blair is balancing long-term benefits against short-term political costs. It's probably a good idea at this stage to cull positive long-term relations with the United States and not be lumped in with "Old Europe." In addition, Britain stands to gain substantially from a military victory in Iraq, both economically and politically.
I think he's banking on a quick war, tangible benefits as a result of it, and the economic benefits of goodwill with a hawkish American administration. If all goes well, people will forget the hoopla surrounding the buildup to military action and ultimately reward Blair for it.
If all doesn't go well... well, that's another story.

One word response:
Treason
Helping the enemy in a time of war is a crime punishible by death.
Any man who refuses to take up arms in defense of his country can show no reason why he should be aloud to live in that country.
What people don't seem to understand is that in order to have true peace, a peace that you know is going to last you have to get your hands bloody. People say "What has Iraq done to us?"
These people want to wait for a reason to go to war and put an end to this P.O.S. (Sadam). What these people forget is that a reason to go to war is usualy in the form of something like Pearl Harbor, or Sept 11th. These are the same people that roasted GW on sept 12th because he didn't use his crystal ball and stop the attack before it happend. Now Bush has evidence that Sodomy is gathering bad things and will use them if he gets the chance, preferbly agenst Isrial or the USA, and tries to stop it before thousands of innocent people die and he gets roasted for it.
Another argument is that if we attack Iraq, terrorist will target us..HELLOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! Where have these people been the last 30 years! Who were we at war with on Sept 10th, 2001?
These terrorist hate us and are not going to wait for a reason, they hate us and will do whatever they can to kill as many Americans as possible. Now we can sit by and when the next big attack comes and this time there are 5 or 6 digits in the body count instead of 4, those of us who saw it coming can say "I told you so" Then we will have a reason as long as it doesen't offend anybody.
The real word is not a nice place. It comes down to they kill us or we kill them, I don't know about you but I prefer the us kill them thing.
-
My note to them:
Hope you all enjoy being human propaganda pawns for Sadaam.
Have a great trip, hope you get on CNN, and may a GBU strike amongst you.

The law reguarding treason can be invoked at any time during a declared or undeclared war. The Cold war was never "declared" but anybody cought spying for the USSR was charged with treason. I guess it was a little misleading by saying "in a time of war". How about just Helping the enemy?
I agree with the previous post, Lets buy their tickets, one way.

From the article as linked in the first post:
In the event of all-out war, they may deploy to strategic humanitarian sites – putting themselves in harm’s way, in order to try and protect the ordinary people of Iraq.
This makes it seem as though they think the USA wants to bomb civilians. If they only put themselves in people's houses, sadly, their risk of eating a GBU is very small.
But every life is precious, and we need to recognise that a war that will kill innocent Iraqis must be opposed with all our hearts. I am going to Iraq to try to stop this war, and so to preserve life”.
If they love all life so much, where have these human-shields been the past 12-years of Saddam's neglect and outright murder of his own innocent people? I guess life is so precious that it's best to let the current Iraqi regime continue to starve and murder its own people and fool yourself into thinking you are saving lives. Heck, if the Iraqis try to leave their sad situation, it's a country with armed guards at the borders who play the role of goaly and knock dissidents back into the game of suffering and death. The only hope for change these people have is from the outside, because within you'll be hung by piano wire if your eye twitches wrong. I guess it's acceptible to let the Iraqi rich, elite, empowered kill Iraqis rather than make war on the evil regime and try to bring about some long-lasting good not only for the Iraqis innocents, but the USA and Europe as well.
Saddam is trouble for the region, period. He's killed more Arabs and Persians than the Jews they are all supposed to hate. A veritible meat-grinder with the war on Iran, and then the murder of many Kuwaitis and entrenchment of power in his own country via murder. The sabotage of the Kuwaiti oil fields and now the support of terrorists who will take the war wider. Yeah, real smart to give your life to support this guy.

I wonder where these human shields were when Saddam was gassing the Kurds or the Iranians...
I think they would do more good in Israel though, since Saddam is bound to try to lob a scud or two in that direction. A couple of civilians acting as human shields in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv might stop that...
Anyway, let them go, its their ass. Darwin had them all figured out.

I'm volunteering to be a human shield. I want to protect the poor people of Maui from possible attack.

Hortlund,
These Human Shields weren't concerned about the bombing of the Kurds because it wasn't the U.S. doing the bombing.
Let them go to Iraq. Maybe they'll meet up with some nice terrorist and settle down in matrimonial bliss.
I wonder what they're children would be like?

I guess I am a warmonger because I want saddam along with all other terrorists to be brought to justice. Maybe we can afford to sit back and let the small countries build wms. Maybe not.
I dont give a damn about the oil I want my kids safe in the future.

lets airdrop the human shields into iraq 1/2 hour before the first wave of rangers goes in.
Everybodys happy.

Because Korea didn't invade Kuwait in the 90's and then signed an article of surrender which states that weapons be catalogued and those weapons destroyed and no-fly zones and the like. He's in violation, the contract is broken and we are back in an act of war.
Korea is very scary though. Just like Saddam, Kim would love to see the West fall and would be more than happy to arm a bunch of fundamentalists with the weapons to do it. Why do the dirty-work yourself when you have a bunch of fanatics who think it's an act of God to make war on the West.

As long as they don't have any chutes, I'd go with that.

December 8th 1941 US declared war with Japan.
December 11th 1941, US declared war with Germany & Italy.
June 5, 1942 US declared war on Hungary, Bulgaria and Rumania.
July 17, 1942 US proclaimed state of war with Hungary, Bulgaria and Rumania.

Well, I didn't say anything to "traitors" today but I did write the President and my Congressional representatives.
I voiced my view of the United States' responsibilities around the world with particular discussion of Iraq and North Korea.
I urge the rest of you guys to get off the BBS for an hour and do the same. No matter which side of this argument you come down on.
There's a lot of young men that didn't get to be old men because they made a huge effort to ensure you would have this privilege.

They don't deserve to wear bdu's.
I think douse them with gasoline, set them on fire then throw them out. drop them from B2's as peaceful meatbombs to feed the starving iraqi people, partially cooked and ready to eat.

ROTFLMAO!
That's gotta take the cake for descrpitive terminology...

Do I even have to write anything... :D
-
Apparently you feel that you do.
-
Todd - maybe. Even if it is a short war, I think Labour will be feeling the repercussions of this for a long time to come in the polls. What if Iraq ends in a similar way to Afghanistan? Messily, with the head honcho still at large - that wouldn't be very desirable.
Cyrano - will do mate - it would be useful to have a 'native' to show us around. :) I think the flights to Barcelona start in April.
BTW, I'm hoping to do the Bull Run in Pamplona this year. My cousin's husband's family live there (she lives in Zaragoza).
It will give me a chance to use the Spanish I've been learning at night-classes. Although I haven't been taught how to say "Could someone please find me a doctor to remove this bull's horn from my ass?" :D
-
I posted this:
'It is your prerogative whether you want to offer your body in protection of a dictator known to use weapons of mass destruction.
And it is mine to support the pilot who drops a laser guided bomb at your feet.
Enjoy the upcoming war. I won't.'
There, that ought to make them happy.
Where can I read their replies?

I think you'll find that the spoken language in that part of Spain is Catalan, not Spanish - although they can speak Spanish of course. I found that I could ask for things in French and was understood perfectly. Catalunya has a bloody history with Franco - ask Cyrano to explain it. (Catalunya's national day is September 11th!) No need to wait till April for those easyjet flights - you can go now. I know that coast right from Cambrils up past Tarragona, Barcelona, Lloret, Tossa, Begur, Cadaques. My advice - go NE from Barcelona, not SW. Tossa was a nice place, Lloret is like Blackpool.
Sorry, off topic.
I think the US should do its stuff with or without UN approval. The UN has let us down. The UN let down the Iraqi people in 1991 - the anti-Saddam activists, if I may call them that. The UN stopped Pop Bush from finishing Saddam. This time, Saddam MUST be removed. No more UN-mandated half-jobs. If he has no WMD as he claims, it's only because he's sold them on to other terror groups. I don't trust the guy an inch, and that's why negotiation with a guy like that is worthless. Remember that many Iraqis are our friends, and many who opposed Saddam were left to face his wrath - all because they were let down by the UN's mandate to halt the Gulf War.
Hortlund's cartoon sums it up nicely! - my feelings entirely.

I know, Beetle. My cousin teaches English over there and speaks Catalan, Spanish and French fluently. :) I'm not going by easyjet to Barcelona. I would have to drive to liverpool or Luton for that, so I'm waiting for Jet2 to open all their routes from Leeds Bradford. Much closer.
BTW, it's still pretty unsettled in that part of the world. About a month before my last trip out there an ETA car bomb was detonated two streets up from the hotel we use. Zaragoza itself was bombed by the Germans I believe, with Franco's blessing.
Still love the place though. The Cathedral is breathtaking, as is the square that surrounds it. The people are great and the weather even better. They don't have a beach in Zaragoza, for obvious reasons, but they do have many open air swimming pools that are grassed. All the Spanish head there after work or school and just chill. We don't have enough of that over here.
