Check the bios to see if it is there as well as looking for IRQ conflicts. Make sure the cable (data) is a good one. Perhaps it is defective?

Is it a DMA capable CD and is DMA on in the system?

Just a couple ideas I had on this. I am still fighting a gremlin on my machine too.

Are you daisy-chaining the hard drive and CDRW, or are they plugged into separate IDE ports?  There will be jumpers on both the hard drive and CDRW.  If you're plugging them into separate ports, just make sure the CDRW isn't set to "CSEL" or "Cable Select"...Primary or Secondary/Slave should work fine.  If it's daisy-chained with the hard drive, chances are it should be Secondary/Slave.
