I'd noticed a lot of rubber bullets and shooting through tanks in tank city in the last few days, but Thursday night was awful.
It seemed like two out of every three times that I spawned (without getting instantly getting knocked out by a camper) I was shooting blanks.
Luckily, about half the times, the other guys seemed to be in the same boat, but boy, was it aggravating!
I see HTC is making server improvements. Will this correct the problem, or is something else needed?

Check the Bug Forums, there were lots of people complaining of firing THRU tanks and such. HiTech said he cured it and its due to go out with the next patch

Until then, assume you are shooting short. Every time I have seen this, I have noticed that a crater appears in front of the target and the round appears to fall through or behind. Increase your range just a hair and fire again. 9 time out of 10, my 2nd shot is a hit.

From what I've seen, the problem is not rubber bullets; NoBaddy is right -- you are shooting short. The problem seems to be that the Z-buffer is hosed -- the round falls short and creates a crater in front of your target, but the dust cloud from your shot is drawn behind your target. Since you see your target in front of the dust cloud, it looks as if your shot landed behind the target, and since you saw it coming down in front of the target, it had to have passed through the target without doing damage (i.e., 'rubber bullets').
I've noticed a similar problem when manning a field ack -- under some conditions, GVs are drawn on top of the gunsight reticle -- which is ludicrous; the reticle is at most a foot away from you, and the GVs are hundreds of yards out.

No, it's not just shooting short. There have been several times when I've happened upon a baddie in one of the streets in tank town and we are close enough to kiss. I start pumping rounds into him (He's so close he's just one big blob in my gun site).. and nada. The same usually goes for him. I can tell he's firing cause I can see his tank bucking, but I'm like superman, nothing happens. Usually we keep at it 'til someone happens along and puts one of us out of our misery. And it isn't just me. I've seen it happen where two or three of us are within spitting distance of someone, pumping in rounds and nothing.

I've noticed that Z-Buffer thingie when shelling bases from a cruiser also. When you get close to a hanger, it looks like your shells are falling behind it when they are really falling short. Same with shelling another CV. The splash is drawn behind the CV when it should be in front. You can tell when this is happening because the dust cloud or splash can be seen below the target... like the CV was suspended a few feet above the water.

Riddle me this batman.
At least 11 times now, I have out flanked a tank camping in an allyway - drove around the buliding until I was looking square on at his behind.
I would fire point blanks at him. I usually get in 5 shots, one in the turret, one in the gas tank, one in the tread, between the turret and the hull, and in the rear panel.
Notta boom. No smoke - nothing but a hit flash.
He then starts to rotate his turret to figure out what's behind him.
turns and one shot - I'm dead.
These are not tiger tanks - but panzers. He's a panzer and I'm a panzer.
Something is hosed.

Nexus,
That happened to me more times than I can count in tank town. On the other hand, though, there were a few times when my tank was ringing like someone was playing "The Anvil Chorus" on it, and I was able to drive away smiling.
