Title: GREAT FUN IN COMBAT THEATER
Post by: TUCKO6 on November 17, 2001, 11:06:00 PM
tonight...as i usually do before logging into the MA, i checked out the numbers in the CT and was amazed to see 22 players.    :)

i popped in, and had one of the best AH nights since i started playing.

seriously, more of you guys should come over to the CT now and then and give it a go...those of you who like to fight, that is...wouldn't be much fun for you furball nuts and base capturing nuts, but for those of us who like to fight, it's a blast!

you guys should give it a go.  besides...the sheep are a lot more friendly in the CT...just ask MANXER!     :D

I agree.  Lets see more Allied and Axis squads give it a go.....puny little girlie-German boys, go defend your Fatherland.  Mom, apple pie, and P-51's for me!  Hope to see you in my six-shooter sights!   :D

Couldn't agree more, I had a real blast in the CT last night. Even without field capture the Allied Buff offensive and longer rebuild times did a great job of hampering the LW war effort.

Those sheep, let me tell ya!

It was a great time yesterday in the Combat Theatre. I think there are a lot of players in the game that find the MA a little too busy for the map size, and this would be a great way to spread things out a bit. It would take a little while for things to perk up in there, but the options are much better. Fuel levels are more realistic, so just imagine...your Hurricane won't run out of gas before it gets to the end of the runway.

the more slowly paced atmosphere is a real change and I welcomed it.

Slow-paced, yet damn more intense.

I loved the early theaters, before the USAAF arrived in Europe.  :) Flying a Bf-109F4 angainst Spitfire MkVs.. fighting between two rival planes of simular era is very intense and refreshing  :D Really gets one thinking.

It's easy for one to say the 109s outzoom stuff in vertical when you are in the MA(Like, when you fight planes like F6Fs with 109G10  :D), but in CT, planes are nicely matched, and the battle is most heart-pumping there. Tactics seem very important here too.

There aren't many people when it is prime time in my time zone, though.. and It is really sad  :(

ps) Tuck06, stop shooting me down!  ;)

Time for a change in planeset IMO.

Pacific setup might be nice to try.

Our squad is ALWAYS willing to go to the CT - as soon as there is some opposition. Any allied squads that wanna give it a go and see 3 or more Grünherzjägers online, just yell  :)

If people would use the CT arena, AH staff might actually do some work to it to improve it. Currently however, the Hurricane isn't an available aircraft there. I don't suppose they'll do much to fix it anytime soon either. I was even shot at by ack over friendly territory (regularily over France as Axis), and doubt there will be much success in gaining players there if it keeps up.

It's quite cool if you can survive the flight to the channel however.

Without a doubt, the CT is unmatched in providing an immerse feel to the combat.  The main detriment to flying there (for me, anyway) is a lack of an objective beyond simply air-to-air combat.  Don’t get me wrong; I love a good fight (and a good bounce even more).  However, to be truly fulfilling to me I need to know I’m having some effect beyond my own survival.  Other peoples’ opinions aside, I believe one of the major draws of the MA over the CT (besides an unlimited choice of rides) is that the war can be won.  Let’s face it…we love it when our country captures a base and the “Base AXX captured by the XXXX” message comes up after a hard fought battle.

I don’t know what the solution might be to get more people in the CT.  Perhaps you should be able to earn points at a higher rate, but be able to transfer them to the MA.  Still, that won’t provide that sense of greater purpose that is lacking in the CT.  Perhaps they should bring base capture to the CT, or tie base ownership to the damage done to the strategic infrastructure.  The more the strategic infrastructure is damaged, the fewer bases that side owns.  Rebuild times would have to be greatly increased, as would structural hardness.  Any other ideas?

Perhaps adding more strategic elements in there isn't a bad idea. I noticed a lot of different suggestions on how to make a strategic arena a week or so ago that might find a potential home here. This way the MA can stay for the furballers, and this arena can be reserved for those with a more 'purposeful' fight. It could be incorporated fairly easily, and might bring in some interest without stepping on anybodies toes.

We'll need some buy in from Hitech for this unfortunatelly. Perhaps Tuck can send one of his sheep from his harem over as payment.

Silly fact is, if we don't try playing in the arena...it won't get fixed. The arena isn't fixed yet, so people won't likely want to play there. Terribly cyclical problem. We need people to take a risk and play there hoping someone notices. If people notice 60 or so people in the evenings on, they'll likely go in and check out what's happening.

The problem with CT is that there is no strat.  There is nothing but historically matched furballs.  No one flies buffs because there is no reason to bomb anything since field captures are not enabled.  Yes, field captures are dweebish - but currently, that's the only "strat" the game has and that is the only reason for bombing - to close fields so that they can be captured. So bombers have no purpose, so all you see are fighters who want to fly the shortest route possible to get to the fight...so you end up with furballs just off the Pas de Calais.

Enable field captures.  Replace it with something else once that something else is implemented into AH.
