Title: Fw190A5. Speed?
Post by: RAM on June 13, 2000, 09:47:00 AM
THis is a question about (yes you guessed it   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) fw190A5).

Fw190A8 had no MW50 boost. It had GM1...but it also had a Manual override over the Kommandogėrat that allowed the pilot to keep WEP on for periods up to 10 minutes.

AFAIK Fw190A5 had NO manual override. Am I wrong?. If I'm not wrong and Fw190A5's WEP is only available for 5 minutes that means it will be slower in the deck? how much slower?...

So two questions in one. How many WEP time is available in Fw190A5?...and what will be its deck speed compared with 190A8?

thanks

AFAIK in all me109s and Fw190A8 WEP time is 10 minutes.

In all the rest is something near 5 minutes.

I have no German data for A-5.  Speed performance should be very close to A-3 and A-4.

USAAF tested a G-3 with the stores carriers removed - same airframe and engine as A-5:  http://members.xoom.com/mikewaltz/p75.jpg (http://members.xoom.com/mikewaltz/p75.jpg)

USN tested an A-5:  http://www.raf303.org/funked/page3.htm (http://www.raf303.org/funked/page3.htm)

Those are pretty close to each other and pretty close to German figures for A-3 and A-4.

Actually I believe that the P-47 had a very good WEP, read it somewhere.

The P47 had a very good supercharger, hence the great WEP.

I know back in my brand W days, the key to kicking bellybutton in the Jug was always WEP.  If you run out of WEP in a Jug and you haven't killed them all or run away yet, you are in serious trouble.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

On the plus side, WEP on the jug can be used to surprise the crap out of those that under-estimate it.  That's one of the reasons I love the big beast so much.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Here's why the P-47D had good "WEP".

Quote
All early Thunderbolts used the R-2800-21 engine. Water injection capability was added to this engine beginning with the D-4-RA and D-5-RE production blocks. Provision was made for the mounting of 15-gallon tank carrying a water-alcohol mixture to the bulkhead just aft of the engine. A line from this tank was plumbed directly into the fuel intake. When injected into the combustion chamber, the water checked a dangerous rise in cylinder head temperature while manifold pressure was boosted. For brief instants, a 15-percent increase in engine power could be obtained, giving a maximum war emergency power of 2300 hp. In the D-5-RE, D-6-RE, and D-10-RE (D-4-RA, production bolcks, the pilot manually controlled the water flow of the injector, but the injection procedure was automatically- controlled on the D-11-RE (D-11-RA) and subsequent blocks. This happened when the throttle was pushed forward into its last half-inch of travel.

All I know is that the P47 had a light, when it was getting hot, the light was blinking, when it was critical the light was steady. All the pilot had to do is to lower hte manifold pressure to keep the light blinking.

I don't think many A-8's had GM 1. Funked's data shows speeds with GM 1 but I haven't read too many accounts of A-8's actually having GM 1.

F-8 had same engine as A-8 and it is said that F-9 had additional fuel injection to supercharger inlet to allow temporary power increase below 1 km. It was kind of poor man's MW 50. I would think that A-8 also had this modification.

This could mean that A-8 might have better top speed below 1 km than A-5. This is just a theory, someon should look actual performance figures.

Jochen, RAE tested an Fw 190A-4 with some sort of WEP system.  They estimated power at 1970 hp and it went 355 mph on the deck.  This was in the files Weretiger dug up.  I'm guessing it was the petrol injection or the boost override.

Gatt/Funked's Fw 190A-8 manual shows 350mph at S/L(with the increased boost). The USAAF Fw 190G-3 chart shows 340mph at S/L.

Afaik the RAE had three examples of the Fw 190A-4; all captured between April and June 1943. Unless the increased boost was around before then, I would guess that the one they tested at 355mph had the extra fuel injector in the supercharger.

Keep in mind that with MW 50 and the supplemental fuel injection system, the increased boost pressure is what gives the power.  The injection of fuel or water-methanol solution just makes the boost increase possible.

So, in short, A5 is as fast as A8 isnt it?

Judging from those charts, the A-5 should be faster from about 1km and up.
