A British, American and French soldier were offered a wish each by a genie after rubbing a lamp they found while training in the desert.

I would probably say it's very similar to our support of the People's Republic of China (remember Tiananmen square, not nice people but one hell of a potential market); our support of Iraq pre Kuwait; our support of (and creation of) the Shaw of Iran... frankly there are a lot of examples where we support(ed) undesirable people, war criminals, terrorist supporters (Saudi Arabia?), dictators, etc. when It's in our best interests.
France has positioned itself to be a major player on the world stage and an international arms producer. To do this you need markets, and except for commercial aviation France has limited sales opportunities. Iraq represents a notable market. You can also look at the position TotalFina/Elf enjoys, and will potentially lose, as well as a certain nationalist sense entitlement as a "world power," and a potential leader of the EU to not have its desires ignored.
As for the common terrorist threat, this assumes that Iraq is a significant international terrorist threat. I don't believe it is (and, the evidence supporting this is slim at best, regardless of the spin used to present the case), nor did the current policy makers (Cheney, Rumsfeld, numerous Bush admin. staffers) who clearly outlined the need for a regime change in Iraq in a 1998 letter to President Clinton based on Hussein's threat to the oil supply in the region. Iraq does represents a significant regional threat to other oil producers, perhaps worth going to war over if the end game succeeds, but it is not a direct threat to French interests otherwise.
