Ok.. heres a chance to pick the day we make the first move on Iraq.
Qualifiers... No small unit skirmishes like our recon forces now on the ground. To qualify, It must be the start of formal 'hostilities', such as the Air Raids on Command and Control we kicked the Air War off with last time.
Items to consider.. phase of the moon, weather, tidal conditions, muslim holidays, status and condition of readyness of US forces, nature of forces, etc.
Make your best guess...
Good luck!

whups..
I pick March 3rd.
-
You'd think a real war would be more serious issue than a source for excessive amounts of jokes.
Sounds like it's just a game or entertainment for alot of people. :(

Who cares, must be a day picked up roughly at least a year ahead by bush-fire warmongers as most of us know.

USA isn't threathened by Iraq in any way. It's just plain rediculous.

The next new Moon is March 3rd, but I think that is a bit too soon. However you can only keep the aircraft carriers in deployment for 6 months or so, so the clock is ticking.
Iraq is heading into a bad time for weather right now also. It might be New Moon after this next one which is on April 1st.
Air assaults would happen before the New Moon, ground assaults right around that time. However since this is when everyone would expect the US to attack they may not do so and start a bit earlier.
I say March 30th.
-
Yup.. went thru the same points you mention Habu.. but I'm going with the earlier date because I'm bettin the administration wants saddam on the ropes asap.. before WMD's get smuggled out by AQ.
-
I'm going with Feb 28, about 1:30 AM. Question...would a Ranger assault to capture southern oilfields be considered 'formal hostilities" or a 'small unit action"?? I'm thinking they might have to surprise them to keep em from playing with matches.

Any effort to hold terrain would have to be considered formal hostilities. By 'small unit action' I'm refering to recon or special ops like lazer spotting teams.
Interesting idea on the dash and grab tho... I'd expect the Iraq's to get pounded for at least a coupla weeks by air before we snatched any dirt... but maybe thats what the Iraqi's will wait for before they commit WMN.. massive precursory air-raids will probably lead to massive WMD retaliation.. so maybe we WILL do a big ground snatch first....
Hmmmm.... interesting. Wonder if the way we fought the last war will work for or against us this time.

I'll wager there will be no war.

What he said.
If it does happen it will be in the Fall. I think it's too late to start before summer. With less ground forces than 1991, we are going to need a longer time for airstrikes to tranquilize the rhino.

Well, at least you're here to judge them without knowing their motives or their true feelings. Take comfort in that.

I was there for the first one, and I think you're wrong Funked. Their forces are very poorly trained, motivated, and led. We have more than enough forces there now to do the job. My best guess is about 2 weeks :p
-
Sometime within the next seven days. Bush is losing the diplomatic war and must act soon.
-
1 week, 2 weeks max. They'll want to get it finished before the summer weather arrives. It won't be much fun having to wear a NODDY suit in the desert heat.
-
there will be no "war" , what will happen is the US and UK will help the iraq people overthrow the butcher of bagdad.
when ? when their ready

You mean like how a movement in the middle east has literally and openly declared a war with the "West" and how one of Osama's higher ups had his leg amputated in Iraq and then sent on his way with some poisons to the United Kingdom? Luckily he was caught or it could've been bad. Nope, no threat here....eveyone, go about your business.
(Anyone know this story, I can't find it online 'cause I don't know the one-legged sheik's name.)

People are on ships waiting to land in Turkey. I don't think we can afford to hold off til fall. Bush won't back down so it has to be soon.

March 25.

C'mon, its fun!
This is the chance of an invasion occuring in the future, not on that the invasion will be on this particular day.

Hmmmm. My prediction is looking good right now. I might not have bumped the date up enough from the new moon but then agan I was predicting the ground attack and not the air campaign which will probably run a week or two before.
-
My prediction when it will start is as soon as the Academy Awards begin their broadcast. I couldn't think of a better time. :D
-
LOL!
I demand a do-over!
-
Rockstar, they will wait till the first celebrity makes anti-war comments. All units will be listening to that broadcast and use that as the "go" signal
-
Well, my estimate was porked by further UN prevarication. The point being that nothing has changed between March 2 and now. Just Chirac saying he didn't favour war "today", when what he really meant was that he did not favour war at any time. There was no way that Chirac could single handedly stop a war, but by causing further delays it means that our boys will now have to fight in hotter, less comfortable conditions.
When the war started, in 1991, the allied action began very soon after expiry of the deadline. Assuming that the same thing happens this time, it could be 8pm Eastern tomorrow night. But - perhaps the allies will favour starting when it's completely dark, whereas Iraq has a full moon at night just now.
