Title: GV question
Post by: Fridaddy on February 16, 2003, 05:14:26 PM
I have recently started into GV combat.

(Rolling into a area and blowing stuff up reminds me of the railroad yard scene in Kellys Heros!)

How does one range the main gun.  I know about the use of the coax MG, and I know about bracketing fire with the stradometric sights. But any tips and tricks from you gunners out there?

use the [ and ] to zoom in pretty close....but not too close....take a guess at range by using commander view and fire a rangeing shot....correct and blast away

The coax is only good for ranging out to about D1.2, where the hit sprites start to disappear so you can't see.  Also, the coax tends to spray around a bunch at range so it can obscure the target with dirt it kicks up from the groundd.

My suggestion is to always start out using the same zoom level.  One of the things you will learn over time to a gauge the distance based on the size of the enemy vehicle as you look at it.  If you use varied zoom levels you will never get an feel for what a vehicle looks like at D2.4 (for example).  If your zoom level is always the same, then you'll start to learn what it looks like and you'll be able to land your first rounds fairly close.  It's ok to zoom out a bit after that first look, but get an idea of what you think the range is at a constant zoom level.  I zoom all the way in to take my first look as this also helps me identify the target type.

Also, just before you shoot, note your range and the position of your gun relative to something on the ground.  Typically, pick a mark on the ground that matches up with a mark on your sight.  That way, when you fire, you will know from what point you need to adjust your fire for your next shot.  For a moving target, also not the position of the amount of lead you may be using since you will need that to adjust for your next shot also.
