Title: Is it true the armors fixed on the Il-2?
Post by: Soviet on October 06, 2001, 07:11:00 PM
I think that the Il-2 finally has it's realistic armor.  I was able to perform Jabo runs in it and take many ack hits and have fighters come up dead six guns a blazing (even 190s and Nikis) and shoot them down with the tail gunn taking little or no damage.

All I wanted was not to be shot down by a single .50 machine on an M3. I hope they fixed that.

Nope, never heard the Il-2 called that.  Germans called it 'Black Death', but 'Flying Coffin' is a new one on me.  Sure you're not confused?
 ;)

The tail gunner is OUTSIDE the armor plating of the IL-2.  Thats why they don't like it.  The pilots may have enjoyed the armor, but...

Hans.

Oh i remember now  :D lol.  I hadn't flown the Il-2 in a while and decided to up and strafe some trains and strafe the Station.  Well i up in the Il-2 50% gas, 6 100Kg, 4 rockets and head towards the train station.  I just finish dropping 3 of my 6 bombs on a train when i get a check six warning i look behind me and there's this 190 coming in on me.  I'm like OMG a 190 i'm dead for sure so i goto the tail gunners position and just hold down the trigger and do a lot of praying, next thing i know "Victory 1 by Soviet" i'm like lol did i just do that  :D.

You caused me some nasty damage though, knocked both ailerons out and i had to make it back to base doing some crazy rudder flying  :D.

All in all got 12 bomber perkies that sortie  :)
