Title: Evergreen Aviation Museum
Post by: Greese on February 18, 2003, 12:51:15 PM
While travelling to Oregon, went to the Evergreen Aviation Museum.

First off, as you walk in, the Spruce Goose is HUGE!  Lots of interesting facts about that plane I learned, but you can visit it for yourself to learn.

Also:  Had a great 109 G10.  Front view looks amazingly small.

Had good examples of a p-40 (flying tigers scheme), F4U-1D, TBM, Spitfire, and a C-47.

Amazing aircraft up close, and not a boad museum.

Just a note, if your in the McMinnville Oregon area (wine tasting, no doubt) visit this place.

Not too far down the road is another air museum (Tillamook).  It doesn't have the big planes... but it does have a few more fighters.

One thing that amazed me was how small the B-17 looked (especially in comparison to the goose).

don't forget vancouver.  not very big but some interesting planes in there too.

Tillamook, is my favorite though.  some great planes plus the building has some history of it's own

Don't forget the OV-10.  My dad did photographic analysis of stuff brought back by OV-10s in Vietnam, and they have an OV-10 there that brought back a lot of memories.

Have they gotten more stuff there since the mid-90's?  It was pretty sparce back then.  Definitely worth a trip once, but not a repeat.

here's the sight to tillamook here (http://www.tillamookair.com/)

some unusual stuff there.

the usmc chopper was cool, never even heard of it before.  2 main rotors intermeshed (egg-beater) with no tail rotor.
well worth the drive.

vancouver doesn't have near as much as the other 2.  but it's only a 15 minute drive.

evergreen and tillamook are a squeak of a drive. but I usually hit them each about once a year
