BTW, the framerate drops are when there are multiple aircraft around, smoke, and an airfield

Don't know the details of your system, but I'd say that disabling sound would have little or no effect on frame rates. 99.999% of the time fps probs are due to old Video cards. For about $65 you can get a new GeForce3 ti200 from tigerdirect.com . Pop that bad boy in and you will have a whole new outlook on life!:D
