It's a pipe dream, but would'nt it be nice to go back to a period of near 100% isolationism like we did in the 30's?
Think about it. We cover England, and the Western Hemisphere. Anyone touches these 2,and they have to deal with us. The rest of the world can go to hell.
France, Turkey, North Korea, South Korea, China.....
Let them kill each other. Israel? The hell with it. Arabs? Screw 'em.
When the world tears itself apart 22 minutes after we pull our boys otta every 3rd world bellybutton backward country, the Europeans and their tree huggers will have no one to blame but themselves.
I hate to sound hearltess, but the world has turned me cold. Let the Afican people starve, the Arabs detroy Israel, and each other. Let the Germans roll over the French. Third times a charm, fellas. This time we're not coming to bail you out. North Korea...Nuke South Korea. I can deal with Nuclear Winter. I've got 2 feet of snow at my house.
I've had it with the world. I'm tired of the USA being the worlds police man, and getting spit on for it.
So to the entire globe, sans jolly old England......

It's an attractive idea. Think of how much we could reduce taxes if we didn't have to provide defense for half the world.
-
LOL

Either that, or simply go public on the world press and proclaim total sovereignty of the world.
Some of the bigger nations will bicker and squabble for a few months, after which some of them will agree to become states of the United States of The World, while others who refuse will be struck down in a ferocius but relatively short Wold War of attrition.
After a few years things will settle down (except for the annoying incidents of rebel groups, which will be labeled as 'Terrorists') and we will then be able to concentrate on a much noble a higher undertaking of traveling thru the stars and conquering other adjacent civilizations.
THAT is our nature.
Lets embrace it.

Animal has been playing too much Civilization. :)

I have a feeling the terrorists will still find an excuse.
But if not, one less problem.
I cannot wait for the day when we don't use a drop of foreign oil!
I'm going to love watching those Saudi Princes begging tourists on the streets.

Does it worked good in the 30's ?
(it's a candid question and I'm not joking)
-
It would have been great if the Damn Nazis did'nt start a ruckus.
Honestly, if history serves me, I believe WWII pulled the US out of the great depression.
But we could have done just as well, selling arms to both sides.
Where would we be today?
Let's explore this.
Pearl Harbor never happens. US never enters WWII.
Germany eventually conquers and occupies England. The Russians fight Germany to a draw, and maintains a border with Germany after signing an armistice.
Japan overuns China, South East Asia, and Australia.
The world is left with 3 superpowers. Germany, Japan, and Russia.
Would Germany eventually turn it's greedy eyes toward the US? An invasion across the Atlantic is mind boggling, and I vernture to guess, near impossible. Japan is happy with the spoils of China and South East Asia.
It's hard to imagine the ramifications if we remained isolated. Anyone else have any thoughts?
And in contrast, what we are planning on doing to Iraq could be the historical equivalent of the US taking out Germany in 1939.
Imagine how many lives would have been saved. Of course, onlt history tells us what would have been an "Agressive War" by the US would save millions. 20/20 hindsight.
-
You seem to forget one little something from your history lessons:
Atom Bomb.
And the NAZI's would not have hesitated to use it later on, nor would the Japanese.
And yes, with that weapon, they would have seriously considered a US invasion.
-
what if USA had stayed out of WW2, interesting thought.
what if england and france had not declared war on germany? would germany been satisfied with half of poland and most of eastern europe? would germany not have invaded france?
we do know that if the US had not embargoed oil to japan, japan would not have bombed pearl harbor.
was it george washington that said "stay out of foreign entanglements"?
allthough , would like to see saddam overthrown, after that i'd liketo see ALL , i mean ALL US troops brought home and ALL foreign aid ended. let the world handle it's own problems, i'm tired of trying to help everyone and getting blamed for everything.
the world dosn't need or want our help , they tell us that all the time.
-
It's too late John the world need you and you need the world.
-
LMAO, FRANCE at least their wine is good or is that whine
-
yea lets forget that our economy is almost totally dependent on the rest of the world. good idea!

You need to review history a bit more carefully...it was FDR's 'New Deal' that is credited by most for bringing us out of the depression...the 'New Deal' was submited in '33 and parts were enacted in '34 if I remember correctly. Some positive economic effects were felt that year and some of the infrastructure projects helped us become the major industrial force that eventualy helped us and our allies win the war.
< pssst > FDR was a Democrat, he was progressive and a visionary who most likely would have been labeled a communist by many of todays right wingers.
-
ahh yes the make work programs of the 30's that brought the hillbillys into the mainstream by supplying them with electricity.
MrLars is right, if you study history you know the vast socialist changes brought about by FDR were bringing us out of the depression long before the war started. what a great president, he told us the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, while this one tells us to ducktape up our homes and to be scared everyday of the week.(makes us good consumers you know).
-
FDR's first vice-prez ( not truman, he was 2nd) was later found out to be a communist, can you imagen what would have happened if he was still vice-prez when FDR died
-
civil rights issues past sooner maybe.

certainly a dramatic proposal, to pull out of the rest of the world.. I like it.. it made me think how the world is so whiny about the US being the only superpower left.. but it was the rest of the world that MADE us a superpower.. turn the clock back to the late 30's.. the US was the world military equivilant of Iraq.. something like the 16th largest army..a crappy navy and a few planes.. we were a military joke.. until the 'sleeping giant' was awoken.

Tempting ... very very tempting ... Hey straffo maybe we could meet then and drink a beer or a glass of wine?

Certainly Duedel the question would be what wine :)
Both of our country have good whine I've still a very good "souvenir" of a pretty good wine from the "Rhin" (sorry I don't know the German name :( of this region)
What about a Tokay ?

Don't forget your other allies in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Call it the Anglosphere.
-
qts , just because they almost speak our language don't mean they our allies, or friends

The U.S. Insulation Policy did not keep the U.S. out of WW1. Well, had the U.S. cut off all trade to avoid damage and death in their Ships sailing the high seas, maybe yes......
Neither did it keep the U.S. out of WW2. Well, self to blame, for the U.S. had been fiddling with the politics in the far east. Japan attacked, and Hitler declaired war on the U.S. (seeing that inevitably they would become allies with the Brits against the Japanese)
So, there may be a point there. Although the U.S. had a passive policy and declaired themself neutral, they still had their fingers all over the world, - the "passive" policy was never properly put to the test.
So, sever all foreign connection to the US. Dock the ships, seal the airports, cut off all trade and be your own masters.
Wonder how that's gonna help you from someone that wants to pick a fight with you though..............
-

Yeah. we got a lil annoyed that the japs were raping manchuria.

That horrible event wasnt known until long after the war.
It played no "woe is them" factor in the US aiding China.
Not that I'm being apologetic to era Japan, the murderous bastards, but lets keep history objective.
-
You refer to Nanking.
I'm refering to the so-called 'northern resource area'. The US was less than charmed with the Japanese developing material resources that we couldn't sell 'em.
-
I stand corrected

Not true Animal, word got out pretty much immidiately and caused a great embarassment to the Japanese government.

US doesn't provide defense for half the world, they're there to cover their own interests.
You'd think there would be any americans anywhere in middle east, if there wouldn't be oil?
How about Panama?
etc. etc.
US is the one causing problems for the western world, not the europe :)

I agree entirely with Muckmaw. The world is ungrateful. And yes the US does it 50% out of its own interests, but hey I don't see any other country doing it out of pure 'love'.
And btw, I'm not a yank.

Especially those ungrateful bastards in Sudan.
