Title: The mouse that roared.
Post by: Habu on February 19, 2003, 07:45:44 AM
Right now there are many threads discussing France and their antics.

Just for some perspective, France's entire current economic output is only about the size of California's.

Economic Output?

Define please.

I don't dispute it. California has a higher GDP than lots of countries.

per Capita GDP is certainly lower since the population of France is 25,000,000 more than California, and their overall GDPs are comparable.

The lists I've read all put USA at the top, and the ones that look at california put it 7th or 8th behind france and italy.

Not really surprising though, considering the high value nature of the work that goes on there (aerospace, software, silicon valley etc).

PPA

now put it side to side and compare with Japan with China ...

PNB alone don't mean anything.

The best information I could dig up.---

rank    country     GDP $trillion CIA Factbook  ( GDP $trillion LAECD)

1 United States_____10.082____________ __10.082

2 China ____________5.56_____________ ___1.159

3 Japan_____________3.45_______ ________ 4.141

4 India______________2.5_______ _________0.481

5 Germany___________2.174______ ________1.846

6 France_____________1.51______ _________1.310

7 United Kingdom ______1.47_______________1.42 4

8 Italy_______________1.402____ __________1.089

California_____________1.344,623 __________1.309

9 Brazil_______________1.34____ ___________0.504

(LAEDC = Los Angeles Economic Development Council)
(trillion = 1,000,000,000,000)

"The reason the CIA figures differ from the LAEDC's, is that the CIA is converting from foreign currency to dollars using a "Purchasing Power Parity" (PPP) index, while the LAEDC is using exchange rates.  That's also the reason why the LAEDC and the CIA report the same numbers for the U.S.: because there's no need to convert U.S. GDP from a foreign currency into dollars."

quoter from bender:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By this did you mean France has 57,000,000 people or that France has 25mil people and that is more than Cali?

At the last census Cali had 32mil people.  I have no Idea how many people are in France, was just wondering.

60 million people in France.

Bounder provided an interesting link.  Going by GPD France and California are just about tied for the size of their economies.  Going by that PPP index India has a larger economy than any european country.

What I meant is that the Californian and French economies are fairly similar in size, but that California has half the number of people compared to France, so the per capita GDP figure for California will be approximately double that of France.
