... denies overfly rights to US military flights! As long there is no UN resolution that says different.
---
Oh, and we won't allow Saddam to enter our borders! So no exile for him at lake geneva.
---
That's what I call neutrality.
Does that mean you will boycot swiss products - well, bad luck for you - mmmh chocolate!
-
as to be expected from the Swiss....nothing new there:D
-
Saddam has placed his Defense Minister under house arrest to prevent any coups, so I doubt he's even considering exile. He'll do what Hitler did if we get close. Sacrifice his people by surrounding himself with them, then kill himself.
-
your probably right Rip...but he does have options tho...like some other muslim country he could choose....
-
As long as the swiss are able to maintain secret accounts and horde riches deposited by rather unpleasant people why SHOULD they get involved. They profit from the "neutrality".
How much interest was accrued on the trasures stolen from the Jews by Nazi Germany???? And just how many decades did it take to get a portion of it returned?????
Yep that's taking the high moralistic road there.
-
no overfly rights? sheesh.. you can DRIVE thru the country in no time.. how long would it take to fly around in a B2?
-
Mav,
I agree with you on many things but here you are just showing your ignorance. The tradition of armed neutrality in Switzerlans goes back centuries...
It may be hard to imagine for a citizen of a country who's political direction changes every 2 to 4 years and history (if such pitifully short term could be called so) gets rewritten every few years according to the recent Politically Correct philosophy. That is true nevertheless.
Swiss would have fought nazis and they would have fought allies or any other trespasser in both world wars. They screwed up by refusing to let in refuge jews - which they admit - but so refused US, England and other countries. There is such thing as culture and historical heritage and swiss is a prime example of that.
They are not angels and have as much crookery and sinfull behavior as any other country but when the neutrality was conceived centuries ago, banking gains were not the top of their concerns.

Wow I'm surprised they won't let Saddam into the country. Imagine that - the Swiss passing up a chance to profit off the blood money of a genocidal dictator. They really have changed!
-
Well, at least we didn't put him in his position and supported him for that many years just to fight some other people who we even disliked more... ;)
---
BTW, how did the US pay/refund for what they did to the native americans or african black for that matter... :)
It took some time but Switzerland, being no aggressor at all in that particular war (or any other - ok, they were mercs back in the dark age), worked up its history (in a huge effort) and payed the victims of another nations aggression respect and money. They took in Jewish refugees at the beginning stopped it when they couldn't take anymore and it became too dangerous.

didn't Bush say something along the lines:
There is NO neutrality....you are either for us or against us.....
so my swiss cheese friends....your gonna have to decide....oh my !!! that might be hard...takin sides:D
-
Who the hell would WANT to fly in Swiss airspace anyway? Planes tend to crash into each other there due to toejamty radar facilities.
-
Pack Saddam with money and he'll be welcome in Switzerland. The same way that narco-dollars (sp?) are welcome there.
-
Buy seiko.

Kirin
That is an excellent policy and i support it 100% :)
WTG!

I like the bulk and simple styling of the Omega.. the seiko looks like a jap stylist was involved.

Nice how you seemlessly worked in the "jap".
You must be proud.

Got an omega seamaster myself and its a solid piece of hardware that just keeps going.

Miko,
Please note that I did not refer to anything other than the last century. Try to stay focused here. If you want to dig I'm sure you can find something negative in even Mother Theresa.
Neutrality is just fine as long as you don't deal with the oposing sides. They sat out the hostilities but raked in the funds from the conflict. Yep neutrality can be SO profitable. It was nice of them to sit out all the hubub, but then except for the banking and such, why would the Germans want to take it over? Do you think that hitler would have let them be if they had something he really wanted??? I don't think so.
-
Boycott swiss girls? On my death bed we will.
-
swiss watches are so like last century, they even still have gears in them, over priced also, i have a japanese solid state digital diver watch that costs $19.95 and keeps perfect time.
i guess it depends if you want to know what time it is or just show off how much money you can spend on a watch.
you could almost buy a car for the price of a rolex

My Rolex will probably be worth more than I paid for it in 10 years. It tells time AND increases in value.
It was also a gift. Should I have said "No thanks?"
-
I like "gears".. I like the solid feel and look. I look at the Omega as art... at least compared to some plastic thingie.. I will pass the Omega down to my son most likely.. I don't wear jewlery but need a watch. If you are only going to have one watch and no jewlery... might as well be a Rolex, tag or Omega. Plus... No batteries with the self winders.
I guess if ya gotta have it explained to ya....

ya think swedes and swiss look different?
lazs

They may not look much different, but it's said the Swiss make a better watch, squareheads make a better sailor. Plus if I'm not mistaken squareheads don't what a watch is for.

LOL - just as Mexicans and Minnesotans resemble each other...

i just moved close to the swiss border, and working now for a swiss
company, well the swiss rox!:)

Doesn't air traffic control stop at 50.000 feet? Does military control perhaps not have a ceiling? Would be interesting to know.
There is a little story to this.
Sometime in the 70's/early 80's my great uncle was flying 747's for Cargolux. One fine day the French Air traffic controllers went on a strike (well, the French are always striking), thereby stopping all flight over their zone. But by going OVER 50K one could pass. So that's what the old man did, squeezed the Jumbo up to about 51K and overflew the French zone.

I'm sure if Saddam applied for Asylum in the UK they'd welcome him with open hands! We've just taken on two Taliban refuges, one of them still considers us as an enemy! Talk about potential terrorist!

Hmm... more like Mexicans and Guatamalans I would think. Same shape heads in any case.

I don't know about France but the US Class A airspace goes from 18,000 to FL600. That's a positive control zone, Transponders and contact with ATC.
And I'd be amazed if anyone ever got a 747 up to 50k, even totally empty and flying on fumes. I think the max certificated altitude is 42K.
Not to rain on your parade or ruin a good story........
-
I used to fly with the Cargolux planes a lot, - I was escorting horses from Iceland to Luxembourg (up to 30 of them sometimes).
That old fully-loaded 747 actually climbed well, and we usually cruised at 39.000 feet. I suspect that a light-loaded one easily goes much higher.
The same old Pilot actually flew Spits in WW2. He managed to squeeze a Spitfire Mk IX HF up to 49.000 feet on one occation. I asked him why, and he replied: "to see how high I could get, - I wanted to get to 50K, but was unable to".
Would be nice to know some more about this.
-
As I said, I'd be amazed at 50K+ for a lot of reasons.
There's a BIG difference between 39K and 50K+, loaded or not.
Then there's the pressurization question. IIRC almost every Boeing system is designed for ~42K max altitude. Then the it can't hold desired pressure and cabin alt will rise with altitude.
Maybe he did it; I bet Boeing would be interested in that if he did.
But, liked I said, I'd be amazed.
Literally. Jaw dropping amazed.

Swiss are a bunch of greedy bastages. GIVE us your money and leave.
THey should be kicked out of the UN... think they are part of the UN.
BLow up all clock works.
Take all tthe drug, jewish, nazi, illegal weapon money from their banks.
Take all there chocate factories and force them to eat Jello.
