Title: There's No Place Like Home
Post by: Rude on February 20, 2003, 09:44:53 AM
Well, as I mentioned in another thread, I have been on a mission of personal improvement regarding knife fighting skills....been flyin the Spit and FM2 in large furballs against impossible odds for about 45 days.

This past week, I got back in the Mustang and headed off for a more relaxed engagement. I must confess the following....

I'm just too old and slow to process all of the data while engaged in these large furballs....I'll scan my 6 and then scan my twelve and engage, only to find out that those I earlier scanned on my 6 are on my six wishing me harm.:) I might get a couple, but I die most every time.

The hop in the Pony was much more my speed....large ammo load, plentiful fuel loadout as well....speed....ah that wonderful speed. The best of the pony for me is I can relax....I just zip around and have my way....I like that:)

Now the knife fighting experience has paid off as well....my reversals are much more effective, my gunnery has improved for those quick snap shots and SA is automatic in the Pony.

You'll still see me in a turner from time to time, but I've gone back to my first love as my main ride....the Mustang is fast, sleek and deadly...landing 5-7 kills per hop is a fine thing...and remember, you won't find my Mustang at 20k, I live at 5 and below....however the most pleasure derived from the flying of the Mustang, is hearing the wailing and gnashing of teeth about Mustangs not fighting the fair fight.....there's no place like home:)

Those that reverse in a P51 against an F6F-5 at under 2k alt and engages in a turnfight, like you did w/ me a few months ago,  are the type if pilots that make this game so much fun. You didn't have to since you were out running me to your base, but when you got far enough ahead for a reversal and did, I knew I was in for a good fight.

That was one of the most fun fights I've had in AH...something that, at the time, I wasn't expecting at all ;)

Rude, welcome back into th fold. Th pony has always been my sentimental fav. I, too, turn on my opponents in a pony, something they don't expect. I die more often than not, but it's usually a fight we both enjoy. I hate running. I'd rather die fighting, than land safely after running like some dweeb.

Ummm...didn't want to say but now that you asked...I did. Got your engine on a high deflection pass after 2 or 3 turns...then I killed you as you tried to ditch...shoulda let you and next time I will if we have another good fight...but if you bail...< BSEG >.

Rude, please be kind enough to inform the 412th where you will be flying when requested. My 20K Mustang will be happy to show your 5K Mustang why that is a bad idea.

Wow, you show him how altitude and an unassailable speed advantage empowers you!  He'll be much the wiser for it.

I paid attention that after I fly f4u-d or other heavy birds in a low furballs my stall fighting gets much better. It is like how they train waterpolo players, put them into a wool jackets and throw into the water. Wool gets water, became extremely heavy, but then without it those players are "flying" over the water.

Well.....just ask and I'll tell ya:)

I have no fear whatsoever of higher and faster bandits....as a matter of fact, most of the 13th TAS will voluntarily give ya their six....and remember, boring us to death by non-engagement, is not really a legitimate kill:)

Guess that is why you guys never got in the squad vs. squad tourny.

Boys, boys boys.

I think it's sweet that the 412th is offering to just throw away nearly 10 minutes of climbing just to plummet down and try to bore us to death.

And think of the RISK they're taking! That whole time they're out of 20k for the deck, enemy planes could be getting ABOVE them!

Yikes! Triple YIKES!

Show some respect for their valor, please.

If anyone has come across me in the MA you'll know that not all 412th spend their flying time in the stratosphere.  Then again, most of the 412th pile-its seem to end up getting kills and being killed on the deck, so they must come down occasionally too.  I guess there is a difference between entering a fight from high alt and staying at high alt to avoid a fight, some just don't care to make that distinction, especially here on the BBS.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever managed to be above a 13th TAS'er though, they always seem to be bnz'ing from orbit... :p

You are correct. I do not, nor will I attempt to claim that I can fight effectively in 1-v-1 or 4-v-4 duels or other such fixed engagements.

Case in point.

Rude and I did 3 duels tonight. Both in P-51D, 25%, merge 5K. Result : Rude 3, Midnight 0.

Aftwards in the MA, 412th met up with 13th over Bish controlled territory at A25.
Result : Midnight 2, Rude 0.
Overall results (IIRC) : 412th 5, 13th 2

(And just for the record, most of the fighting started well above 5K.. about 12 to 16K IIRC) :)

Overall, I must admit that Rude (probably all 13th) can turn-fight pretty damn good. I don't turn-fight well at all, and that's why I prefer E advantage over turn advantage.

Yeah, that was a nice vultch you got on me there. Another 15 seconds, I'd have been airborne too. Could've counted as and A2a kill then.

Hehe.. you got me there Toad. But hey, I wasn't expecting a 13th guy to be rolling a Typhoon from a field that had 412th Mustangs over it. I figured your Typhoon to be just another poor shmo that didn't know any better....

..Oops..

you were :D

What were the odds in these fights?  I remember them being 5 v 2 and 6 v 3.  You guys are good at what you do but coming in with alt. and numbers does not prove much.

Just the way I see it.

I've been expanding my horizons. Coach always hands me my heinie thinly sliced with a spicy mayonnaise when I meet him in his Tiff. No matter what I'm flying.  Figured it's about time I learned more about it.

I like upping at capped fields. The kills you get are much sweeter. Getting 3-4 of the vultchers is like winning the Superbowl, but even one is nice. If you get shot down before you get the gear in the wells...... well, so?  I'd hope somebody with tons of E could manage a vultch of an aircraft on the ground.

I guess I could have upped a sector a way and climbed and climbed and finally got there and then I'd probably only have been 8K below you by that time.

But I fall asleep so easily on those type flights.

I'll take capped fields over that anytime.

Just my .02, ymmv.

LOL.. now you guys are making me laugh.

Milo, I don't know the exact odds, but it swayed both ways throughout the fights. There was 4 of the 412th and 3 of the 13th TAS, however mix in various other Rooks, Bish and the occasional Knight (we shot down 2 knight F4Us at one point) and there was no outnumbering going on.

Toad, you had gear up.. not by much, but they were up. I don't like to vulch planes still on the ground. With .50s, all that ends up happening is parts fall off and the guy gets out safe. You need to have those HE cannons to get the pilot kills on the ground.

well rude... glad to see that you still have a place in AH in your declining years...  When you get really old and slow I bet the 412th will let you join.

It was a grand experiment tho huh?

oh... sax is gonna still fly FM2's tho right?

It's my favorite ride Lazs, still like the mustang a lot, but solidly hooked on the FM2.
I just need to shoot your pasty hide a couple a times to help my confidence:)

Guess I better delete and reload. Seems my gear lights are working incorrectly.

But nonetheless, you are "muy macho", amigo. I am dust beneath your feet.

About 20K beneath, near as I can figure.

*snicker*

This is great. The two "premier" pony squads in a squabble.  As a dedicated pony pilot this is really entertaining.  I've flown w/ both squads... loved winging w/ bluemako ...he was usually down at alts where I fly, and we worked well together !.  The other 412th....I never really saw them.. they tended to keep to themselves.  Was looking for a squad for a while and on the same team as the 412th...loved their web page..cool stuff!  They never spoke with me.. I must not have been worthy  Bahahahahaha!  But then... they have sofaking and xaqut1 in their squad... real friendly guys

13th Tas guys, at least since I joined bish... tend to fly down toward where the meat of the fights are.. and are great fun to wing with and a good group o' guys.... friendly always... quick to come to your aid...a great squad

Midnight, I rarely go above 15k... next time you're cruising around at your 20K.. let me know where you are, and I'll show you that having that alt advantage in your pony is not as big of an advantage as knowing how to really fly one in the MA :)
