Title: Just a memory
Post by: Animal on February 21, 2003, 10:40:38 AM
I remember five years ago, I met this girl on the internet, who lived on the other side of the island, about 2 hours away (long drive by PR standards). We talked on the phone for months and I wanted to meet her because we were infatuated.

One sunday morning I gathered the courage and stole my dads car and drove by the beautiful mountainside interstate, listening to some smooth Bossa Nova, Reggae, and Jazz rythms as I felt the sensation of a bird who leaves his nest for the first time.
When I got there I made love to the girl on a desolate beach in a beautiful afternoon, and spent the day trailing the beach.
On the drive back, I was worried as hell of what my dad would say or do to me when I get back, sunburned, with that "deer caught on headlights" look of a kid who just lost his virginity, and with a slight smell of alcohol.

When I got out of the car, my dad was waiting for me outside with a strange look in his face. He said

"Maybe you are a man now."

and shook my hand for the first time.

That was the deepest conversation I ever had with my dad.

Farewell old man, the pain is over, see you on the other side.

great story Animal, i know you will never forget it.

my dad (who had the same kidney ailment as I do) was sick in bed, and I was over for a chat. When I left that night , as I said 'see ya' he gave me a look that I had never seen before. One that as I reflect, summed up a lifetime of love and pride in a son. I never saw him alive after that moment. I'm so grateful to have that tiny moment forever.

A PARABLE OF IMMORTALITY
by Henry Van Dyke
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, 'There she goes!'

Gone where? Gone from my sight ... that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, 'There she goes!' there are other eyes watching her coming and their voices ready to take up the glad shouts 'Here she comes!'"

My father left twelwe years ago, suddenly, in a sunny  afternoon, two month before I was becoming a "father".
My biggest regret is that I 've realized whats the meaning of "being a father" only when he was gone.
Only tardily I've really known all   he made and  felt for me...
there have been less words between us, but now I know what a great man he was  to me....

Sorry Animal, its a great loss for you; the best thing you can do, is  to remember  all the moments  you had with him and keep forever your shared feelings.
