Title: Is it possible to win the war anymore?
Post by: Hans on June 15, 2000, 05:55:00 AM
It seems to me that the map that is used in the main arena is too large for the number of players in there.  The number of bases needed to capture to win the war is too great.  There are also too many to defend (more bases than the side has players).

Is 1.03 going to have any new maps, perhaps some created by the new terrain editor beta test guys?

Hans.

I've seen a map reset a couple  of times in the last 2 weeks.

Well I can tell ya it is possible to lose it...
We have been riding the edge of a stall for 2 weeks in knight land. And it definatly has reset once in the last 2 days.

Weird. When this version was about to come out, people wondered if the wars might not last long enough...

IMO Knights are being biatch slapped by rooks and bish on a double team for the last several days. I guess when you are hard to defeat the opposition will always gun for ya.

A 1 is a curse to who ever has it.  It opens up your HQ and city to get pounded as we have seen for the past few days.

The Muskateers (sorry for the spelling) have been having fun killing me.

That's strange, because when I've been on the last few nights, the Rooks have had the least number of players (seemingly a country ripe for the picking) and are still able to do offense against both Bishops and Knights while trying to maintain some sense of defense.

For the last few nights, the Knights have been trying to take either field 5 or 9 when I have been on.  Last night I counted 4 B17s and 2 B26s, plus fighter escorts, over 9 at the same time.  The B17s were unmolested by the Rook defense because the Rook defense was low.  Eventually when the ack was down, some of the B17s and B26s came down to strafe the field(yummy, me and my M16 took down two, and I never died for once).  Base 9 was never taken while I was on, and this was a span of 2 hours.  Ack kept coming back up.  A 47 tried only one drop in those two hours, even though the ack was down for most of that time, and there was a constant stream of Knights coming down to 9.

The night before last, it was a similar thing at 5.  A constant attack on 5 for nearly 2 hours, and they never took the field.

I'm not knocking the Knights, it's easy to tell they have had a hard time keeping ground.  I'm just pointing out that launching 6 buffs and 5+ fighters at a single field, spending two hours trying to take it, never getting it....and then there are complaints about gang-banging?  There is always gang-banging going on, but it's certaintly not 24 hours a day against the same country over and over for days at a time.

<<edit: Oh! To keep this post on the topic of the original thread:  I like the map size as it is now.  I don't think there will be a new map with 1.03 or soon after, we just got this one.  I'm not sure how HTC will handle the maps, but hopefully they will put up a rotating map in the SEA or even the MA after they get ahold of one or two maps from the editor>>

Fury you are talking about 1 incedent. Most of the time in pacific evenings for the last 2 weeks both it has been bish-rook vs knight.
I dont know what game you are playing, but knights are allowed to make the odd bomber run too. Its not just get vulched every day..

Last few times I was on the map was 66%-75% green with nice little rook icons.  I don't think all of that came from the Knights.   We've been taking Bishop fields too.

There are 24 hours in a day, and I am only referring to 5 out of the last 48 hours. Broad, general statements like Rook-Bishop gangbang makes it sound like it's been going on 24 hours a day.  6-8pm EST last night and 9pm-1am Tuesday, the times I am referring to...Tuesday night late, some Rooks started a push for the reset (Knights were down to 5 or so).  And both nights, Rooks had the least amount of players (at least the times I looked).  But like I said, gangbanging either goes on or appears to go on all the time, and that is especially apparent if one country seems to be on the down (last month it was the Rooks who were having problems, it was not pretty, I was there).

My comments about 5 and 9 were more to point out strategy in the game.  If the Knights are truely getting gangbanged, how can they spend two hours with 4 B17s, 2 B26s, and 5+ fighters trying to take a well-defended field while their territory is being gobbled up?  I understand counterstrikes, and trying to shift momentum, and the like, but there comes a time when you have to give up and try another field, or at least try to cap the field and get a 47 in there.  I just thought it was wasted effort while the Knights were being gangbanged (just IMHO, I'm sure many will disagree).

Last month for nearly a week, it seemed every time I signed on, the Rooks were playing defense and that's all I did, try to stop Bishops and Knights from taking more or Rookland.  It wasn't fun.

p.s. the last thing I want to do is intentially pour salt in anyone's wounds, I'll drop the subject now.

I'm not going to get into the gangbanging argument because I think all sides get there fair share it just depends what time to frequent the skies of AH.

On the subject of the map I think it's about the right size and has about the right number of fields.

The only thing I don't like is there is no longer any clearly defined country borders. In Beta you had the mountain range and many a good furball was to be had in the canyons. You knew where your country ended and what you were "Occupying" a feeling of accomplishment was felt whenever the "Homeland" was secure. This is (IMO) now missing and it's just down to field taking, yes I know that's what it's all about just seems something's missing somehow. I understand the reasons for the loss of the mountains between countries as anyone who has tried to climb a hill in a tank will appreciate. (We need road's, Trains etc).

Fury your right..
I was just pointing out that it has been the knight turn for at least a few days. It goes around. Last night was better. The rooks and bish where spreading it out.
As to stratagy. It can be a subtle thing in the game. People want to play there own game. Some times that feels like a big bomber strike no matter the situation.
