Title: Who needs oil?
Post by: 2stony on February 24, 2003, 03:01:53 PM
I read an article in Sunday's paper about hydrogen power. Hydrogen is currently used in a minute ammount of cars at the present. Hydrogen will burn in a combustion engine the same as gas does. The only residue from burned hydrogen is water vapor, which is absorbed back into the atmosphere only to be rained back to earth. Also, that means no pollution.
To change a current gas burning engine over to hydrogen requires two things. A different tank to hold it and different fuel injectors to feed it into the engine. The current cost is a few thousand $$$ to do it. Also, the cost of a gallon of hydrogen is about $.70 and would be even cheaper when the spring runoff creates excess supply.
If hydrogen cars were built from the ground up, the change over in the plants would be minimal.
This change would eliminate the need for oil. That would eliminate the need to really worry about Middle East oil. If we weren't buying any of their oil, then they could go back to riding camels and playing in their big sand box.
I know that change would eliminate some jobs, but there would be just as many created. There are rivers in just about every country in the world that could create hydrogen from their dams, so no one country would have a monopoly.
The reason hydrogen hasn't already replaced gas is because all the big oil tycoons would be out of a job/money.
IMHO, "who cares"? The planet will run out of oil eventually, so it might as well be sooner than later. Elimination of pollution is the biggest reason for the change and use of an endless supply of energy is the other.

lol

it's not vehicles that are the problem.. though you might think so.
it's our whole economy .. based on Oil (based) products..
plastic being the biggest..
then of course there's Industry.. (factories, etc)

vehicles are such a tiny percentage of what we use oil (gasoline) for

The only real hang-up to all this, is that the infastructure to deliver this on a mass scale does not exist and would take some years to get put in place.

But we should start building that infastructure.

This is no problem for me as I live in Western Washington(state, not D.C.).

No problem. Those can be changed over too. It's time for the planet to grow up and stop worrying about how much money in your pocket.

Is this really true?

Also, what is the MPG that you could get on a gallon on H?

while I agree it's past time for change, I doubt we'll see it voluntarily... something (like war, shortages, etc) will have to happen to force the issue.

Let's not forget Hydrogen is explosive, I would like to see the modifications a car would need to safely carry a tank of hydrogen.

If anyone wants to read this article, it's not available at the Tacoma News Tribune website. I could, however, copy it onto my puter at home and provide the link later.

Why do people keep thinking that fuel is the only thing that we need oil for?  Do you guys have any idea how much stuff out there came from oil? It's a whole hell of a lot more than just gasoline.  To get away from oil you're talking about changing the whole fabric of how we live our lives, not that it is such a bad idea.  Just don't let the media fool you into thinking that our only use for crude oil is fuel...

I'm just say'n!

The whole point of this thread is that there is a long term solution to our oil and pollution problem. Humans are smart animals and they can figure out pretty much anything given enough time. Well, the time is now. Lets not be so full of ourselves and keep letting the $$$ control our lives.

that remains to be seen.  'inventing' stuff that polutes and trashes the world in the name of convenience and comfort aren't exactly things I'd associte with being smart.
