I dunno if anybody has followed the Cup Races.. this year New Zealand, holders of the Cup are defending against a Swiss challenge!! Landlocked Switzerland!! And they are winning!!
Even wilder.. the Swiss Boat is skippered by what was New Zealands Greatest Hero.. Russ Coutts, Skipper and winner in 2 previous defenses.. for New Zealand. Now he's considered to be New Zealands Greatest Traitor!
Not Since the Aussies took the cup from the US on the last turn in the last race of the series, (may dennis conners rot in hell for eternity for not covering) breaking the longest winning streak in sporting history has so much ire and passion been shown in a series of Cup Races.
Looks like the swiss will have it from the kiwi's.. with a kiwi at the helm.. oh; the iorny!

Sailboats are for sissies and old farts from NY. :p
SOB
-
LOL! Blow me SOB. I can tack on the suction. :)
Watching the New Zealanders blow out a carbon fibre boom, ship 6 tons of blue water in heavy seas, re-rig and drive on was truly awe inspiring. Seamanship is not dead down under. Those kiwi's have my respect and admiration. They may be losing the cup this year, but gawdamn my soul, it ain't from lack of skill, heart or ability.
New Zealand !

Sailboats wheeeeeeee!
Almost as gay as flying toy planes.
How can they call it racing when they only go 10 mph?
Where's my froggy?
:)
-
I'll have yah keel hauled.
and 'toy planes' are wind up toys that run around on the kitchen floor.
real men don't drive subaru's.
:D

WHAT ABOUT CROCODILE DUNDEE?
YOU CALLING HIM NOT A MAN????
HUH?

Hang, I raced a Hunter 26.5 single-handed when I was in my early 40's(55 now hoping to make 56:) ) This boat is great with 130% jib. It came with a 110 and I bought a 150 just after purchase. However, the 130 is the jib to have for this boat in just about any wind condition! I tried using a cruising spinnaker while racing and found it difficult to lower even in a slight breeze, but raising was a snap.
Man I remember sailing on Lake Stockton, Mo, at night. The breeze was consistent and once you got her balanced I could let the tiller go and just ride for miles:) Nothing like a clear night with the stars out and minus light pollution, ya, just great sailing!
It's been a long time since I have been on a boat and really miss it. I lusted after the Hunter 30'er when it first came out in the 80's. It had standing headroom and could be easily single-handed too:) Due to lack of money and the discovery of boat building the 30'er remained a dream.
I started to build a 17' catboat in 1994 and had to hand it off to someone else because of my health:( I built it using strip plank method. He heeeeee, lotsa epoxy!
I think the Swiss will win the Cup:( USA needs to get that puppy back ASAP!
For you people who think sailing is a limp-wristed sport, just try sailing a Laser and then tell me about how easy it is heheeeeeee.

Not true Hang... many of us are just as happy to see the Swiss win. The cups stagnating where it is, our guys got cocky, and the whole Russ Coutts being a traitor attitude has really put a sour taste in my mouth.
Having said that its pretty much a rich boys toys race.
I personally hope the Swiss kick butt, our guys need a kick in the shorts to wake em up.

Hiya OZ!
I campaigined a 1974 Catalina 27 fer 12 years.. I used to eat Hunters fer breakfast. ;)
My Blood n Balls racing days are over... untill I slip my lines and back outta the slip. Then my hungry eye sweeps the bay fer likely candidates fer a thrashing to windward. No two sailboats on the same tack are ever doing anything other than flat out-cut yer nuts off racing. ;)
The early 80's were the last days of great production sailboats.. everything desigined since the death of the IOR rule looks like a gawdamned korean tennis shoe.
Here's SV Hangtime.. an 82 Irwin 34 IOR racer. She still goes like hell, and damn if she aint real dry and comfy too.
-

It has ALWAYS been just a rich boys toys race.
Even now with the smaller boats, it's still a freakin amazing thing to watch.. the crews, damn few of 'em rich men themselves, get a shot at driving and and working a spectacular machine.. a refinement of ages of experience at defying logic and nature. Regardless of the technology and money lavished upon the boat, it's still man vs wind and water first.. the other boat just happens to be doing the same thing. :)
Yah just can't be aboard one while she's workin to weather.. the crush and shudder of the wind laying her rail down; the surge as she lifts to the swell.. and not get a big damn smile on yer face.
Damn, winter sucks.

This is what I sail now.........http://sailrclaser.com/

Ah, yes! Nice lil boat. Jon Elmaleh, the developer/designer of the R/C Laser; is a friend of mine. Helped him kick off the marketing on the Laser about 8 years back.. I still have mine.. hull number 3. ;)

Here ya go.........bring bucks heheeeee:) Let's race!!
http://www.jboats.com/j24/ course forget comfort!
I was always able to out point a Catalina 27 with speed too. Just love to luff 'em up;)
Like your Irwin, nice quality boats:)

Cool! am 1011. A late bloomer heheeeeeee:)

Did you know that they can go faster straight into the wind than with the wind? I just found that out a few months ago, as a fan of science I found this amazing. My dream is to buy a large sail boat and spend retirement sailing around the caribiean sea........

Heheheh.. my PHRF was 178 in the C27.. I used ta whip up on Capri's and Jboats let alone those hot lil Hunters... nothin would frost their balls more than crossing the line 3 min ahead and still losing the race. Gimmie a big PHRF rated boat any day.. winning in total comfort has it's advantages to sore old bones.
;)

Roger that, big time:)
Sailing, I understand, is required in heaven:)
-
Hang, I downloaded that free program to follow the races. I hope they convert it into a game. It sure has nice graphics.
-
If I remember the Cat 27 and the Hunter 26.5 had the same PHRF or were close to having the same number here in the midwest.
-
Did you know that they can go faster straight into the wind than with the wind?
well, not quite 'straight' into the wind... but yes; a beats and reaches are the fastest points of sail; 'off' the wind and downwind are slower. And more dangerous. ;)
Try a Hobie some time. The cats can actually sail to weather FASTER than the wind. There are cat/foil designs now that are pushing the 50 knot barrier... under sail. Now that's freakin FAST.
-
LOL! The PHRF on the Hunter 26.5 was about 186.. mine on the Standard Rig C-27 was 204. Every year I raced her, the local race committie shaved 5 or more points off my boat.. last season I sailed her I was handicapped down to 185.. and still managed to take the SBYC season trophy on points.
Damn, those were fun days.. bon't think we ever finished a beercan race sober.
-
I just wanted to say that Hangtime is gay, but I still think he's OK.
Cobra
And I did catch 2 of the races.
-
I owned a Catalina 38 (CONTAGIOUS) for a few years. Lived on her during the summer and rented the house. Not a bad existence. Very pretty boat and quite fast. Sold her in 1997 to a guy in Hull, MA.

Terror alert at America's Cup
From the International Desk
Published 2/25/2003 4:09 AM

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Letters have been sent to at
least three foreign diplomatic missions in New Zealand, threatening
terrorist acts should Iraq be attacked, police said Tuesday.
Authorities said letters meant for the U.S. Embassy and the British
and Australian high commissions in Wellington were intercepted late
last week at the Auckland Mail Center. All of the letters contained
powdery substances and tests on the contents of one letter indicated
the substance was cyanide.
Police said the letters made reference to the America's Cup, currently
being contested in New Zealand, and security at that event has been
increased. Authorities asked that spectators and participants at the
America's Cup races continue their regular activities, but to report
anything out of the ordinary to police.
Security for foreign diplomats was also being reviewed, New Zealand
media reported.
The New Zealand Herald, which also received a copy of the letter,
reported that the country's counter-terrorism commission would not
make the contents of the letter public to keep the chances of copy-cat
threats being made.
Jon White, the assistant commission for counter-terrorism, told the
newspaper: "At this stage we can't rule out the possibility that the
letter may have been written by the same author who sent a threatening
letter accompanied by cyanide to the American Embassy at the time of
the New Zealand Golf Open."

Just snapped their mast and tossed 3 overboard.

Hangtime the Kiwis never praticed thier boat in the conditions they races yesterday. I also think they were afraid of their boat.
Swiss were out in bad weather with both boats and Kiwis were in a secluded gulf with light winds in much smaller boats. Phsycalogical edge to Swiss in this match. Connors is old and needs money hes still one of the best out there. Tich mans game it is thow, got to respect those who can sail one of them boats lots of work.

Just snapped their mast and tossed 3 overboard.
oh damn.. poor bastards. hope the crew's all ok. loosing a spar can slice a guy in half if the rigging unlays under tension.
rules state, the boat must finish with the same number of crew as it started with... so they had ta pick 'em up. least thats what i told myself when i fell overbaord during an offshore race once... ;)
as for the 'swiss'; having a rough water advantage... bah. the swiss boat may have been set up better for heavy weather.. those machines are not one ounce heavier than they absolutely have to be to survive the conditions anticipated on race day.
Sounds like the swiss stayed conservative.. and out-guessed the kiwis and the weather.
can't wait to watch the replays..
-
Hangtime if your response was to me about the swiss ruff water advantage . What I was implying was that they spent more time on the water than any other team (18 months with their boat if I remember right) they new how to set the boat up for just about any condition. Chek out the web site for the americas cup good phots of the swiss out in strong winds with both boats. Same day Kiwis were running around in smaller boats. I just think the kiwis were and maybe are a little afraid of their boat. The first race it filled with 6 tons of water and broke. Second race they were simply out foxed up by 8 to 9 boat lengths and loose. Still fun to watch got to appreciate the amount of work to get those boats around the course.

Remember my first experience on a laser when i was only used to big boats.
6 beaufort saw me and the laser goin over top 4 times in a row within 10
min. Was ready to swimm back totally exhaused as i was but managed to sail it back at least :D
Was much easier to go 22knots on a big boat at 8-9 beaufort with spinacker, 7 people in trapez and wind comin from 5 oc.

Hangtime just doesn't strike me as the yachting crowd type. You know the type I mean...zinc oxide of the nose every day...blazer and cravat for dinner at the "Club".
Not many guys at the Yacht Club's I've been to would even consider being associated with anything called The Fat Drunk Bastards....Drunk maybe...and possibly Fat...but Bastards? Oh my...that just wouldn't do...what would the ladies at the Garden, Bridge, Tennis, or Beach Club say to that one?
;)
Hang...did you do the Newport-Bermuda race ever?
-
Did some Hobi-cat sailing off Santa Barbara back in the 70's. Those bastages are scary fast!
-
they have always hated me in the yacht club races.. but they hated my crews even more at the season end parties. my grinders both rode harleys.
i was actually protested on a race for mercillessly hammering a boat trying a luffing duel with sling launched water balloons. Hip to hip reaches were always acccompanied with a torrent of ribald taunting and broadside vollys of beer can empties.
the yachties take themselves way to damn seriously. but despite the snots that seem to dominate yacht clubs, i never lacked for good rail meat because we had fun racing, always; win or lose.
Nope.. never tried newport-bermuda. Last time i was in a big boat bluewater race was 30 years ago in the ensenada race. That wasn't much fun. ;)

ROFLMAO :D :D
I might have stuck with sailing if you had been around when I was learning.
I just never "fit in" with the yachties.
Newport/Bermuda raceweek was fun, only because that is where all the chicks were...the liquid panty remover flowed freely. Now that I'm married I go there on the occassional business lunch. Nothing else in that place holds any interest for me.

Nice Thread - not done a lot of offshore sailing but a fair bit of dinghy - 420 with spinnaker in a blow is FUN :D
Anyone say its panzy on an offshore boat at top whack look at the Jules Verne Challenge - Ellen Mcarthurs boat shed its mast a few days ago while doing 30 some knots !!! Freakin big bang there !!! The loads you're trying to control are enormous.
Anyone want a crew / ballast call me - Im serious - want to get into offshore.
