Title: Missions......
Post by: hazed- on February 26, 2003, 06:41:15 AM
I am fond of setting up missions in the MA(yes i have Napolean complex! :p) and after reading several posts on missions Im beginning to wonder how much input we the human players will have on where and when they run and what we fly in them.

I really dont want to lose the ability to plan out a mission , encourage players to join and run it as a group. These can be a great source of fun for us oldhands and also a great place for newbies to learn to fly in formations, cover wingmen and be covered themselves etc. Then realise the benifit of it too.

Will I still be able to plan missions? I was kind of hoping for more options on the mission planner not less for AH2.I hope its not being regimented too much.

If, in order to get to the stage where you plan missions for yourself, you have to gain enough rank,( say Captain/squadron leader) thats ok by me as of course its far more realistic.

So how about it HTC?

are we going to get an expanded mission planner but will need to gain high rank to use it
or
be able to make missions from the start,  but only now slightly more limited due to AI planned missions being a priority?

thinking about it neither sounds too bad but it would be a shame to loose the ability to make complex missions for ourselves. They can be a lot of fun HTC and a pretty unique experience online.
I think you have a great idea and tool with the mission planner we have now,but its not used at its full potential in MA at present by us, the players. When we do use it its a great part of AH! Ive had some of my best AH moments during missions :D.

The problem I see here, hazed, is that the Mission Theater concept probably relies on AI-created missions to create the fights between sides.     The mission generator creates a strike mission, but at the same time creates a CAP or intercept mission for the other side that guarantees contact and an ensuing fight.

If you are able to organize a 40+ player raid without the opposing side being aware of it, how will opposing forces be able to get into position to intercept?   The MT radar settings will likely not show as much detail about what's going on all over the map.

I see your point about the fun of a self-created and promoted mission though.   Maybe it could be arranged that a player-created mission in AH2 is submitted to the AI for approval, and then the AI could have the option to generate an opposing mission?    Something like that anyway, just to keep the AI aware of whats being planned.    Or maybe the AI could be tied into the enemy radar, and when a force is detected, the course, altitude, and speed are plotted and an appropriate intercept mission is laid in...

I would guess that targets that are hi priority (on either side) for supply or support, or frontline targets would be those which are going to be targeted by bombers or other attack aircraft. That assumtion combined with whatever radar is available should be plenty of intel for defending these targets. Plus there would probably be patroll flights which will pick up enemy activity also (I would think)

I am pretty much in agreement with Hazed. Ai misions are cool , with the numbers that they will produce. But what about human error? Or outfoxing your opponent? Is it that important to log in and immediately find a fight..or be lead to it all the time? I'm sure that will be great a lot of times when I log on and want to just join up and have at it, but what about the many times that looking at the situation, asessing what could be effective, planning it out and doing it is what some would like to do?

Don't confuse TOD with Classic. Completly different goals and game play in each.

OK, I`m totaly confused now. I first understood that AH2 (TOD..whatever) would be a mission based addition to the game that was on a "Jump through the hoop for a dog biscuit" type play, meaning promotions for certain tasks required to advance , etc. I understood what were playing now ( classic...whatever) would continue in place. Now are you saying that "classic" will no longer exist when AH2 (TOD..whatever) is released?

Jackal, you're really confusing ME now. Who said that and where? No one ever said such a thing nor even implied it. Let you give my limited view on this matter :).

AH as we play it now will live on under the name "AH Classic". Besides AH Classic HTC is right now desinging "AH: Tour of Duty". When they add these new features, AH will be renamed AH2: Tour of Duty. Easy eh :).

Jackal AH2: Has 2 types of game play, both on a new graphic eng.

The 2 types are Classic and TOD.

Back to the mission planning discussion....

What I think would be very interesting would be to have
missions assigned with objectives and a general outline
and available resources.
The mission planner (a human) would then plan the mission
in detail to accomplish the mission objectives using some set of intelligence data and pulling from the available resources.
