Funked: How does Subaru rate with maintenance and repair costs compared to NA vehicles?
My wife is thinking of getting into an AWD Legacy as opposed to a Jeep TJ.
I tried to tell her that NO WAY, because Funked drives one, but she still wants to know anyway.
Any help would be appreciated in this regard.

The Jeep TJ,
But my 2000 has been fine. Beat the hell out of it a few times off road, and it just keeps on ticking. It does go through airfilters fast though.
-
Thnx for the quick response Gto, I had the 4.0 Commanche that I used for Snow Removal, so I know they can be tough.
I've also heard some caution on the TJ as well. Problem is my wife has heard some scary comments on Subarus Repair costs.

This is my first Subaru, so I can only give my experience (17000 miles). The only issues I've had with it so far (apart from accident and theft damage :( ) are:
1. Minor wind noise on driver's side window, fixed under warranty.
2. Rough clutch operation in cold weather, fixed under warranty. This only affects certain 2002 cars. They put a revised clutch assembly into the 2003 cars which solves the problem. If you have a 2002 car with the rough clutch they will fix it for free.
As far as turbo vs normally aspirated, I don't think it's an issue, at least with Subarus. The turbo has a dedicated coolant loop which circulates even after the car is shut down, so it won't cook the oil in the turbo and you don't need any special cool down procedures. They have been making the same basic WRX engine for almost 10 years and it is a reliable unit. Some of the Aussies at clubwrx.com have 80 to 100k hard miles on their early model WRXes with no trouble. All I have done to the engine is oil and filter changes at the recommended intervals. I use Mobil1 in all my cars and am using it in this one.

Thanx Funked :)
Guess we are gonna have to look for some old time Subaru users.

my 1990 cherokee has logged 154 thousand miles, brutal commute conditions in the NE.. snow, ice, rain, chuck holes, brutal summer heat & humidity.. never failed to start, never had to shovel snow, never froze my bellybutton in the winter, never cooked it in the summer.
i never 'babied' it, serviced it at @ 5,000 mile intervals. Never replaced a single water pump, replaced the belt and hoses as normal maintenance at 100,000 miles. It had one set of front rotors replaced.. on it's 4th brake job. the tranny and differential worked perfectly... always. 2 exhaust systems in it's lifetime, 3 sets of tires, one set of shocks. Never needed anything serious done to the engine.. a PCV system, some vaccum hoses, one oxy sensor.
Not a spot of rust on the bodywork, anywhere. all window seals still funtional. all window motors still work fine. keyless entry system still faultless. never suffered a single blown fuse or electrical glitch. It still does not rattle.
In short, it's a tough functional lil beast, and my kid drives it now.. still running strong.
Theres only ONE jeep. everything else is just a wannabe.

ive also known alot of jeep owners that have nothing but problems, but ive yet to meet a subaru owner with problems.

subaru's are lil tie-eyed rice burin POS, made by lil weenies wif buck teeth and round glasses wearin white lab coats. the call each other "ahhhhhh sooooo's".
the damn things are piteously gay.
picture yerself in a lil gay suabaru.
then picture yerself in this.

If nothin else... remember pearl harbor.
;)
-
then picture yourself fixing it, or paying someone to fix it. well some of you would enjoy that, sure. btw i think they make more japanese cars in america then american car companys do. and they pay their people more.

frogboy, yer mom's a man.
and she needs a shave.
;)

THIS is a jeep..
-
That looks like a Yugo with over sized tires..
I've also owned a Jeep not a TJ tho... 93 Grand Cherokee with the trusty 4.0L I-6. (the best motor jeep has) which I put 180K on it..1 Water pump, and a tranny. But I broke the tranny after an off road adventure .
About the subies..I've hear decent things about the Subies.. As I autocross..the subies are making a decent irunning as far as handling their right on the money. I've spoken to some of the guys and they haven't had any problem with theirs.. one guys has taken his Impreza 2.5RS and put a turbo on it. He had not one problem.

Great thread...I've never been big on Subarus (even tho I know a lot of Experimental Aviation guys using them in various kitplanes)...I've always liked Jeeps but was told they are expensive to maintain. Reading thru here, and with what Hangtime has posted, seems to prove that wrong.
My Saturn is 8 years old and I'm torn between something along the lines of a Honda Accord that will easily last 10 years, or something a bit more fun, like a Jeep Grand Cherokee or so. Still pondering...I like the Honda's and have always wanted one...but the Cherokee seems a LOT more fun
-
i've pulled more than a few subies outta the sand at the beach. also dragged one outta gully i just drove thru. lousy lil rinky dink tires and lack of ground clearance plus poor engine/tranny cooling in adverse conditions seem to relegate the subies to yuppie 4wd status.
it just ain't a jeep. :)

Ping, there are many websites that compare the cost to ownership, here is one for example, read the article and click the link:

Hangtime is Frogman's Mom!
SOB
-
Thanx Rip.
The Subie would not be for offroading. I have a 1976 Mil 5/4 ton 4x4 Chev for that :).
Were moving to Rural and She will need a car for the bad weather in the winter on the back roads.
I Personally would vouch for the Jeeps 4.0 L engine as I used it for Snowplowing and I never had any serious problems with it. Im just not so sure as to Maintenance comparisons and the family comfort aspect.
We do appreciate all the input you guys are giving. Thanx.

FWIW I'm roughly NFL lineman sized and my Subie fits me great. Only other car in that class that I can fit into properly is the VW Golf. Headroom is the key.
-
my shorts fit me great. they ain't exactly roomy tho.
'headroom is the key". Willie The One-Eyed Wonder Worm agrees.
I myself prefer vehicles yah get into tho.. not put on.

when i lived in upstate ny for school i remember lookin at the parking lot in mid feb there were 3 or 4 american cars 9 volvos and 5 or 7 subaru 4 weel drive thingys several types. guess nothing else would start. no jeeps was about 40 below.
p.s. the subarus didnt have the scorch marks like the american cars where people had built fires under the engines to warm them either.
in college we had a ragmobile that was a subaru 4 weel drive station wagon. beaten without mercy for 2 years (was old when we got it) never once died was toyota like in durability. they sold it in perfect running condition for like 500 bucks . were amazed at the fact the got 500 (one door wouldent close ect ect ect)
i would get one in a min just for the painless 4 weel drive .
jeeo 4 weel drive aint painless. i have had 3 all sucked unless you consider working on cars fun .
-
perfect running condition as far as it started didnt miss and all the gears worked some consider working breaks to be part of this.
bailing wire holding the trunk and passenger door closed in no way effected the perfect running condition of the vehical.
