Title: Waaah! I want my kill count adjusting ;)
Post by: beet1e on February 27, 2003, 06:21:39 PM
Hehe - remember all the whining there used to be, and all the padlocked threads?

This isn't a whine, but I was astonished when I dropped a 1000# bomb on this PNZR - who had stopped to shoot our town. (My enemy colour is set to yellow)  I would have thought the blast radius would have done something to that PNZR. OK, I know that TIGRs are indestructible... but a PNZR?  See what you think...

HeHe,  I have a picture just like that but with two overlapping craters from 1000lb Bombs. But with a Tiger sitting in it, somehow I wasnt surprised  ;)

the crater doesnt mean thats exactly where the bomb hit. The craters will overlap an object or gv but the blast area doesnt effect the gv.

Here's what I think. :)  Air is an extremely poor medium to transmit blast effects.

For example, if you placed 200 pounds of high explosive under a tank tread, I suspect it would flip the tank.

On the other hand, if you detonate 200 pounds of high explosive 10 feet from a tank, nah, it's going to rattle their teeth and they're going to say, "holy smoke!"  But, there will be no damage to the tank.

I repeat: Air is an extremely poor medium to transmit blast effects.  If you want a tank destroyed by HE, you better put the bomb ON the tank.

That looks like a direct hit to me... and no damage?

I don't attack GV's that much but only last week I killed a Panzer with a 100kg bomb from an IL-2. I 'tossed' it (damned hard to so in my experience) but I got the kill. He was receiving attention from other people too so I don't know if I was responsible for all of the damage... or maybe I just knocked his tracks or his engine out and he ditched? We'll never know.

A squadie and I did some testing of Tigers and eggs. What we found out was rather startling. Not about the Tigers, but that we both saw the same crater in different places. He saw it right under the bellybutton end of the tank, I saw it a good 20ft away. FE's dont always sinc up I think.

Plus, if his connect did a burp about the time the egg hit, couldn't he have missed it on his FE? Not saying he cheated, just that this aint RL. Its an imperfect virtual world we have. Things happen, or not as the case may be.

AKCurly - you ought to check out the damage done by the carpet bombing by the RAF and USAF prior to D-Day, on tanks in the area.

Close detonations of 1000 lbers would flip a Tiger like it was made out of Balsa wood - quite comical really. :) Although, not for the crews, I'm sure.

Sure, but you're not talking about the effect of a single 1000 pound bomb - right?  A string of bombs would produce a large blast effect.

Dowding, I don't know how close a 1k bomb must be to a tank (in real life) before it will flip the tank.  Perhaps someone familiar with blast effects from HE munitions will tell us.

I know one thing:  It takes a lot of high velocity air to overturn a 50 ton vehicle. :)

I think the panzer somehow got infected with the damage model of the p-38 during your dive.

Nopoop!  Well I look out of the back by pulling back on the hat switch. If you don't have one of these, may I suggest mapping your Caps Lock key to serve that purpose. :D

From: http://coolschool.auf.net/01/frag/spine/fraginfo.htm

A few passages are worth noting:

1.  The effect of blast on personnel is confined to a relatively short distance (110 feet for a 2000 pound bomb).

2.  Armor penetration is accomplished by shaped charges or kinetic energy penetrators.

3. It is probably unwise to assume an armored vehicle could be stopped by a fragmentation warhead. Any substantial amount of armor would require a specialized projectile.
