Title: HELP Xp problem...
Post by: NUTTZ on February 27, 2003, 07:19:32 PM
I upgraded from Win98se to Xp.

Since the upgrade when i click on something, lets say AH main page for instance, Soon as I click to open something up POOF black screen and computer is rebooting. This is very random, sometimes things will open sometimes POOF comp resets. I can't find out what is doing this, it's so random. Today I clicked on an e-mail and POOF rebooted, and lost all the incoming mail.

P4 2.53 256 RAm ddr2700 ( I know i need more)
Gforce T-4600
SB live5:1
100Gig 7200 RPm HD, forget if its Maxtor or IBM

asus Mobo P4s8x.

Scan disk and defragged all the time no errors.

any clues?

yeah, here's what happened:
microsoft got such bad press for the "Blue Screen of Death" that they made XP so that when it got a system error, it would reset the system.  That way, people would claim XP is stable as hell and the power company was at fault (or their PS).
What you gotta do is go into system settings and change what to do on the event of a system failure.  Make it at least give you a blue screen; then troubleshoot.

Incidentally, I've got one of those problems.  On a cold start, it usually gives me a 0x0A stop error; sometimes it's a different one, but inevitably, it's at a specific address (0x805 or thereabouts). No hardware is mapped to there beyond the PCI bus.  As far as I can tell, the only software that regular inhabits the neighborhood is Microsoft Office. Anyway, once I got everything else settled (Bad stick of ram, which may be your problem. check http://www.memtest86.com for some free test materials), I was left with this bug which is damn consistent. (=cold start, 10-15 minutes in, will crash on the same memory location. If I reset before then, no crash.  After crash, I can and have run the computer for days without problems).

Did you UPGRADE?  Or did you do a fresh install?  If you didn't do a fresh install I would reccommend you do one.  I have had XP since it first came out.  It is stable and no errors and now black blue or skyblue-pink screens.

Hey Dinger, where exactly do you make that change? I'm seeing a similar problem on both my old computer and the one I just put together, and its almost impossible to troubleshoot.
